Mercier ::: What did I just buy?
Bought this frame yesterday for $40 from a guy who claimed it was a Mercier 300. Not so sure...
Can anybody help me conclusively I.D. it?

It looks the same as that one to me. Or is it the same bike? The seat lug isn't lined on yours though.

Mid-70s, some form of 1020 steel, probably competed with the UO-8 in the market place.

Posting two pictures the first what i think is a mercier 300.The second which appears similar to the original posters frame is an ebay bike which the seller called a competition.

How much does it weigh? What's the seat post diameter?
The stamped rear dropouts and the abundance of braze-on's on an early 1970's French bike usually indicate gas-pipe.
But what the hell, it's still a cool frame and it was only forty bucks.

For $40, I'd say you did OK. Most of the decals look in reasonable shape, and with a little scrounging I would imagine you can get a pretty nice rider out of the deal.

Thats really cool. My best biking buddy when I was in 8th grade had one of those. Came with sew-ups, Nervar steel cottered crank, Simplex Prestige derailleurs, plastic saddle. I always thought that was Raymond Poulidor on the seat tube. He was the star(the Eternal Second) Mercier cyclist back then.

The 200 had 3-main-tubes of 531 (usually plain gauge), and typically had forged Simplex DOs (these on the OP's are Simplex, but look stamped). I know the 100 often came in this green color, but this looks a notch better than a 100 given the BCM headlugs and chrome touches...I've never heard of a "Competition" but this might be one.
2nd thought: it's much more like a typical 100 than I had thought, based on this series in WoolJersey:

same tubing, stamped DOs and chrome, same forkcrown, just different headlugs and decals.

that is one I'd call a model 100, but though it has the more typical "100" headlugs, it has no chrome on the rear triangle (does it?) and does have the foil decals with Mr. Poulidor on the seat tube...guess there's been some variation over the years. Too bad we don't have the library of catalogs for all these French brands that we do for Peugeot.
