Just bought a 1974 schwinn continental and couldn't be more confused.

I've been looking to buy a classic road bike for some time and have finally done so. However, this is my first road bike (I also have not been on a bike for years) and I have no idea what I should be doing in ever aspect of bicycle maintenance, bicycle riding, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I really want to get comfortable with my bike because I want to use it to commute. Please help. Also would anyone know of better tires for the numerous potholes/cracks found in the great city of Chicago?

thanks!

the best 27" tires on the market for your application will be the Conti Ultra Sport and the Gatorskin, or the Panaracer Pasela or Pasela Tour. The Panaracers are less expensive then the Conti's and are just as good. Walmart use to sell 27" tires but they were junk as is their tubes.

Tube wise 27" tubes are difficult to find, but any 700c tube will also work.

Bicycle maintenance is best described by going to You Tube and simply put bicycle maintenance in the search, you can do the same thing on the internet and you'll get a wealth of information on how to maintain your bike.

Are you looking at keeping it original and replacing worn parts, disassembling and rebuilding it with modern parts, or anything in between? I modernized a 70's Super Sport, cost a pretty penny but it was fun, the bike looks and handled great and it was a cool learning experience. I used Sheldon Brown, Bike Tutor, Youtube and countless of other free websites. I built my wheels using youtube and ehow.
