I always thought it would look cool to some drillium work and a newer aluminum group. I was debating on doing the rings on my Centaur cranks and the levers on my 8 speed Record brifters and a few other bits. Can't say I've ever seen it before but then again there might be a reason why also. Lol

oh and by the way, for those of you that were commenting on the photography, here's what i used to take the photos.

Canon T2i
and my brand new prime lens i just bought, this lens is good at detail and what it does is really focus at a certain distance then blurs out the rest of the photo, so the one this you really notice is the detail on what you are taking.

That's absolutely stunning. I can't believe that's not NOS - as Gary notes, the decals on them were never what anyone would call robust. Chrome looks perfect. Wow!

Super Record all the way, Andrew; I'll drill a pair of gear levers for it if you commit today.

I don't do drillium on anything newer than Super Record

Awesome find - congratulations.

I didn't know what you meant by "spumoni" version, i thought it was a popular italian bike racer from the past, then i looked it up the name and realized it was this :

I have owned a lot of vintage road bicycles, over the years, and few are as nicely crafted as a higher end Pinarello. The Montello is gorgeous and it is nice to meet it. The last Pinarello I had was a full Columbus SL Trevisio and what a great bike it was - for a slightly shorter person:-(

I'd say this bike calls for a nice plate of that spumoni and a glass of asti-spumante!

The issue with drilling modern rings are those nasty little steel pickups to facilitate smoother shifting; invariably they will get in the way of a nice, evenly-spaced drilling around the ring's circumference.

As for the brake levers, I'm sure it could be done. However, before I myself were to do any modern brifters, I'd first have to learn how to disassemble (and of course reassemble) them. I always strip the anodizing off and I wouldn't do that with all the works together.

Lots of reasons why I do this, but I won't bore you with the details

but don't worry Drillium Man!,

i've got a bike in the works that i may need some drillium for sure, hopefully the deal goes through. If i get it, i know who to go to, go to the one and only DRILLIUM MAN......

Cyclist by day, crazy drill wielding, hole making, paint your drillium, shave material/weight off of almost anything, superhero at night.

btw do you do birthdays? my little cousin needs a superhero at her bday.

Since I haven't any newer stuff, it's hard to know what could be done with it. I did add a little drillium to Bianchigirll's Chorus RD, but that was limited to drilling around the outer edges of the jockey plates and five small holes on the outer main body plate. So, it can be done, but personally the new stuff doesn't seem like it lends itself to improvement in appearance with the addition of drillium - not like the older, less aerodynamic stuff. It almost seems sacrilegious to add drag-inducing piercings to aero components, you know?

i'm going to do a new posting and take pictures when i do finish the bike and i'll give you a hint there, and well let's just say this, this build is NOT going to be cheap. i ask people sometimes about how much they got it for too, so don't sweat it.

no they aren't, i would like to do it, but i'm not sure what clearcoat to do? can anyone help us out? i hear some clearcoats actually mess up decals and cause them to shrink or shrivel.

Beautiful frame, love that paint job!

I think Grand Bois recommended Duplicolor Acryiic Enamel clear for going over decals... there are some threads on that subject if you can find them via search.

You can take a look at this google search:

Forget spraybombing that beautiful frame...please. The trick to clearcoating decals is to mist on the first coats and to build the clear...after, it can be wetsanded and buffed/polished...any decent painter who has experience with tubes (motorcycle frames for example) can handle the job. Do any minor touch-ups first also, of course.
