Is my new Colnago a Master, Mexico or Something Else?
This is essentially another episode of what I found in Fort Collins Colorado, a Colnago.
The story: About a week ago at around 10:00PM a seller listed a Colnago road bike on Ft. Collins Craigslist for $75. It was my size (within a cm). I saw it about an hour later. I knew he would be flooded with e-mails and told him as much. I also told him that I would pay more and if he received other offers and I'd appreciate it if he kept me in the loop. I know, I know... I essentially invited him to let me make a bid after other offers came in. But I had to do it. I did not hear back and by the following mid-day the listing was gone. I forgot about it and went on my way thinking someone either paid a million dollars or found the deal of the year.
Thursday afternoon I receive a phone call from an unknown number. It was the seller. He took the add down because he received too many responses. It wasn't clear why he called me, but I'm glad he did. He researched a little and came up with a very reasonable price. I made the hour drive that night and came home with a new bike.
I'm not sure what model it is and was hoping any experts could help me out. It's close to full Campy Nuovo Record. The dates vary from '71–'75 and the brakes are the pre '78 models. Original owner said he bought it second hand in 1981. From some research I guess around a 1976 or 77, is that about right? I'd be more interested what model it is? There are no decals of model. There are remnants of a Columbus sticker. The Clubs seem to differ between the fork and lugs. Are there any other telltales for model?
And now less jabber and more pics!
Cheers,
WjV

Thanks Otis. Super is what I meant, not Master... What were the giveaways if you don't mind me asking?

It's very likely earlier than '79, given the non-recessed rear brake bolt. I'd say best guess '76-77.
Could definitely be '78 - in which case I'd expect to see the porta catena holes in the dropouts, more likely than not.
I also think a '79 would probably have the square rear brake bolt mounting.

A very nice Colnago Super you have there.
I have a line on its twin right here in the Twin Cities.
I am having a tough time paying the fellow's asking price though, especially considering it is roughly four times the asking price for the new one I bought in 1979!

That bicycle is, indeed, "something else"! What a nice old Italian bicycle and so glad you got it.
