Strumey Archer Shifter Cable Woes

My new (to me) Raleigh Sports wasn't shifting. The indicator spindle (chain) was pinched and the shifter cable was a mess. I will be ordering new ones, but I have a question regarding the cable and the crimp that goes inside that barrel at the axle. Will this crimp come with the cable when I order it? A standard cable crimp is too big to fit inside the barrel (I tried) and my LBS had nothing that would work.

Thanks

Usually, the new cables are attached via a bolt so they are adjustable vs. the fixed length of the older cables. This should come with your new cable.

I have a question regarding the cable and the crimp that goes inside that barrel at the axle.
Not sure what you mean by "crimp"? The cable is attached to a fixing bolt, the fixing bolt to a treaded adjuster, the threaded adjuster to an indicator chain, to a rod which goes into the axle. Which part are you having difficulty with? Also please tell us what Hub you have and it's age, as the indicator chain and rod are not universal for all hubs.

My set up differs from the two pictured above. On my set up, the cable end goes into a hollow barrel about 1 1/2" long. Then a cable crimp goes on the end of the cable to prevent the cable from being pulled through the barrel. The cable end attachments pictured above are slightly different. It appears that the cable is pinched in position. I also just noticed that this newer style end is included in the purchase of a new cable. All should work out

On the hub, there should be S/A & some numbers & letters . Let us know what is on there to identify the hub & help you.

My guess OP's talking about the crimped brass on the cable that fits inside the threaded cable end:

(Sorry for the crappy cell phone picture).

If you don't want to use the adjustable ones like mparker326 shows, you can go to a hobby shop and get some small brass tube, cut the cable to the right length, put the old threaded end on, and crimp the brass. Some folks solder or braze it on, too, so it can't get away.

Replacement shift cables have the bolt you describe. OEM shift cables have the crimp the OP describes:

Right- the older ones have the knurled housing and a crimped cable end inside, the bolt-on is the more recent one you see around now. The cable path also changed in the early/mid 70s, but as far as I can tell the cables did not change at that time. The bolt system came later.

Thanks all for the input. Another LBS had an replacement cable in stock (sitting on the shelf for years). What I realized is that I was also missing the nut with the cross hole in it. It was gone and suspect that the previous owner couldn't shift at all. My LBS also happened to have one of these - so at the moment, I should be good.

The rims on the Lady's bike are really pitted and I'll be replacing them with the alloy ones offered at Sheldon Brown.

One other thing that was missing were both brake adjusters on the Lady's bike. The cables just stopped at the brake arm. It's good to have two bikes to compare (his and hers) - because this is my first foray into vintage bikes and I'm learning a lot fast and having a blast.

I found out the they're both 1970 models as is the Sprite that I now possess.
