Peugeot Super Vitus -- keep or not?

I have a love of classic bikes, even the ones that don't fit me and I'll never get to ride. I've spent weeks staring at this Peugeot, which is a 64cm and waaaaaay too large for me at 5'-10", even though I want badly to ride it. I can't bring myself to strip the Triomphe drivetrain, nor the Normandy/Mavic wheelset to use on other builds, as this Peugeot is all original and way too pretty to dismantle.

I'm more a rider than a collector, but appreciate beautiful parts/pcs and a light road bike from an era of heavy cromo tubes. The Super Vitus 980 is light and responsive, but one slip and my giblets are toast at 35" of standover. I'd love to hear opinions on this sort of situation. Keep it with the hopes that I stumble across a similar frame in my size or get rid of it? Vulture-izing the parts for my Raleigh Pursuit that actually fits me is quite tempting....

I have a '60's Schwinn Typhoon 2-speed kickback hanging in my garage that I dearly love, but it's made for someone 5'4" not 6'2". My daughter likes it so it will go to her one day, but I know what you mean. My vote is to get it in the hands of someone who will ride and appreciate it.

I say no, if you want a rider, as that bike could just be so big that it could even affect your ability to control the bike safely, plus the bigger you get an SV980 bike, the more whippy/ flexible it would be. Just wat till the correct size comes up for you and you can then really enjoy what an SV980 frame ride is all about. Good thing is, the price of these bikes have gone down quite a bit recently to much below the typical $350 price they used to get just two years ago because of the depressed market for C&V Peugeots presently.

My Gitane made of Vitus 983 is an incredible ride. My vote is keep it together and find another C&V aficionado.

As Julia would say... "Saaaavvve the giblets!"

BTW, FYI, the 983 tubing is supposed to be a little bit thicker gauge tubing compared to the 980, so it results in a slightly stiffer frame than the 980 tubed ones. My brother had a Gitane Criterium with the 983 tubing and it rode really nice too.

I have one similar, and will build it up over the winter. It's a perfect fit at 60cm, stiff enough for me, rides very well, but, it has the quill stem, just like yours. If I were you, I'd keep all the components and sell the frame in the spring, when the price will be more fair. Meanwhile, you should keep on the hunt here and Ebay to find a similar frame in a 58cm. The prices should get much better for the PSV/Triathlon frames between now and January or so.

Doesn't fit, not even close = needs to go to a new home.

Please don't confuse ebay "asking" prices with "selling" prices. Many sellers never get their ask price. some are far from it. Value is determined once an item actually SELLS. Its easy enough to check SOLD prices.

I agree.

I definitely wouldn't part it out because it's so original, and while it's tough to give this bike up, I think it's only right that you do because it really deserves to be ridden and there are some big riders out there that would just love to have this bike...

980 is some of my most favorite tubing. That said, it is my experience that it is too whimpy for larger frames. Further, if it doesn't fit, it doesn't matter because you will never be happy with it. Peugeot PSN/PSV's are not that rare, so if you really want one, wait and you ought to be able to find one.
