Old Schwinns never die...they just come back better than ever:
'85 Peloton, 9sp Dura Ace 7700 with downtube shifters:

'87 shorty Tempo with Shimano 600 tricolor:

'87 Tempo, 'Guiness Foam' pwoder coat, 8 sp SHimano 600 tricolor:

'87 Tempo, 9sp compact 105, DT downtube shifters, Ultegra/Open Pro wheelset:

'87 Tempo, 9 sp compact 105 with STI's. Bought the bike from BianchiGirl years ago. Ride this on centuries, set several new personal best times on it last year:

'87 Tempo, all stock with Pro 3's, new saddle. One of several I've refurbished over the winter. Love this paint scheme!

Yep, another '87 restoration, both this one and the one above are 6 speed Shimano 105. Such a sweet bike:

'88 Tempo built for one of my BikeMS 150 team members last year. This one's a 24 incher, Shimano 5500 9 speed triple, components courtesy of khatful:

'87 Prologue with Dura Ace 7700, set up like the Peloton above:

Wow, I get the feeling you like Tempos...

I picked up a stock 87 Tempo in near mint condition recently. It was really light with the 700x22 tires that came on it, but I have some 700x28 Conti Gatorskins on it now that are heavier. It couldn't fit the 700x32 Marathons I have (rubbed at the rear brake bridge).

Thinking of switching it to a triple crank (which I already have) or compact double (which I'd need to get) to get some lower gearing for the hills around here on longer rides. I think I saw some pictures of an 87 Tempo converted to 650b too, which may be fun to try if I can find a wheelset that's not too expensive.

I put our Schwinn Twinn Sport on a diet a few years back to shed a few pounds (the bike's) prior to a Charity ride with my youngest boy.

Dropped the rear hub/drag brake, added alloy rims and handle bars...it's still a tank

Triple! I did it with my 87 tempo as well as brifters, freaking love it and I hope you would too not 650b though.

I'm really excited about this bike. 74 Sprint.

Bar tape needs to change, but I'm otherwise ready to call it done.

1964 Varsity go-fast project, from a few years ago, and running a 7-cog cassette with 8sp spacers.

With the 1/2" clipless pedals, it goes pretty good, now at 32lb w/kickstand.

I dig it. I bet if you switched out that fork for like... virtually any other fork... you'd probably trim a lot of weight off of it. Those varsity forks are pretty intense.

My reintroduction into roadbiking, a $25 garage sale 79 LeTour IV, This is after I replaced the old chrome rims (with 700c alloy), brake levers with Suicide Levers (to Aero levers), seat, tape, chain, paint....but she was still a little small for me. She has moved on. By changing out her wheelset, I believe the weight got down to about 28 pounds, not QUITE the SuperLite as advertised on the 1020 sticker, but I guess for her had, an under 30 Schwinn WAS considered light.

I think that fork weighs 4 pounds.

The head tube angle is about 70 degrees, so any replacement fork would need 50+mm of offset or the steering would be unmanageable.
The 100mm stem is definitely the longest that the geometry will support. I first tried a 110, but couldn't hold a line when riding out of the saddle, sprinting and climbing. Best to start with a very big frame and use something like an 80- 90mm stem imo, these bikes lose a lot of top tube length to the slack seat tube angle (69.5 degrees iir), which steals several cm from the effective tt length.

I would like to polish and chrome-plate a Varsity some day.

I see many Tempos like this one here but no mention of the tubing used or what level they were, this one is Columbus, was this common, I thought it was only the higher end models were using Columbus?

The Tempo was never too far from the top of the line. The catalog shows the 85 as using double-butted crmo Columbus Tenax.

I searched Tenax and was surprised at the amount of info saying it's actually SL renamed just for sale to Schwinn, seems like the bike is a sleeper!

Blemished SL or SP depending, columbus wouldn't let Schwinn call it what it was for obvious reasons...

I built this '77 Super Le Tour for the bike paths in Dayton Ohio (rails to trails) - max 100 mile one day ride w/plenty of food stops.
The hubs were purchased in the mid-80's and used on a bike I rode for 25 years - a pair of Suntour sealed hubs. The wheels are Mavic Open Pro.
Then I equipped the bike with my favorite friction derailleurs - Suntour ARx. Added a period correct Blackburn rack - and put a nice pair of Shimano 600 brake calipers..... I may change the saddle. The LBS is trying to convert me to the dark side of leather.
It is not sexy. It is not super fast. It is not super valuable - but it may be my favorite bike.

My '84 LeTour got an update today. New wheels, tires, brake, wrap and a bell. Much better this way, IMO.
