Hi, I just finished getting my bike out together (with the help of my mechanic)

It has a full first generation C-Record engraved group with Shamal wheels

... We put an 8 speed campy cassette on with proper campy chain

This works well with the ( ? 6 speed ? ) rear mech...

Here's the dilemma... I REALLY want to have C-Record shifters that have the curve at the tip...

I found a nice set indexed to 8 but the derailleur doesn't shift properly on index and the shifters are not usable in friction

From what my mechanic told me there is no way to make that shifter set friction (friction is my only option)

He has a set of second generation C-Record shifters with the curved tips on his master and they are the retro-Friction model... He said that is the only set that will work

I'm having a hard time finding a set though...

Here's the question...

Is there any way to make those indexed shifters work in friction?

Will the 10 speed TT bar end campy ones work in friction? (I'm told that under that black plastic cover they are engraved with the campy logo and thus the same as the old ones)

Any other ideas? Keeping in mind I want it to have the curved tip shifters on this bike

The 8 speed shifters are index only.
I have never seen curved c-record retrofiction shifters.
Try to find a 8 speed rear derailleur, that should work work or c-Record friction shifters.

They did make those in friction (I tried them on his master last week) but they are rare...

On my old 7 speed ones with the friction switch, before knowing that the friction switch was there, I just pulled the Syncros gear out to make them friction... Is there any way to modify these ones? Or is the problem that they don't have enough tension because they rely on the click to hold it in place... ?

Without being there and seeing it I'm just guessing here so slap me if I'm wrong.

But I think all you need to do is to take the synchro apart and find a plastic washer large enough to fill the space with something equal in size that is going to create friction against the inner metallic plate of the synchro. You may have to experiment with slightly different thicknesses of plastic washers before it works the way you want it. Run this past your LBS and see what they say.

I know why you want to keep those shifters because their kind of rare, so I don't blame you. The Campy Series 2 was far easier to convert to friction and that's why your LBS is recommending them.
