1987 centurion ironman, what pedals to go with?

ok so while i wait the arrival of my centurion i wanted to look for pedals(it does not have any) i want to stay period correct and wondering what would work best? my particular bike has shimano 105 components, so maybe 105 pedals? or shimano 600? My other question is would i be able to ride any of those with regular shoes? I have never gotten into spd pedals and for my mtb i use bmx style pedals with stiff sole shoes.

I ride 80's clipnstrap 105s and the like with running shoes. They kinda suck in Vans, Converse and other thin-soled shoes, cuz you can really feel the back bar that's made to fit into ye olde slotted cleats.

The only stiff-soled shoes I have are some Diadora MTB shoes and they suck in 105 clipnstraps because the soles are too knobby and hang up on entry/exit.

Adidas Samba's or Puma Roma's work really well with 105 or 600 pedals with toe clips. They aren't clunky at all so they slide in easily. I have Shimano 600 tricolor pedals on my '87 Ironman 'Miami Vice'.

You just got yourself a very nice bike. I have quite a few bikes that are worth a lot more than my Ironman but I do love that bike.

I might recommend Chrome shoes for something with a little more sole to them that will make riding comfortable. I used to have 105 pedals and concur with the fact that you can "feel" them when you're riding.

I got Shimano 105s toe clips on my 88 Expert.. I like the toe clips because I be commuting a lot of my bikes. I wear the converse type high tops.. Works for me..

Got a pair of 105s to go on my 89 Master too. Picked them up at a show for $25 pair.. They are not the 105s on the Master.. Haven't put them on yet!!

Decked out for night ride home from work..

Did the pedals come with toe clips? They are kind of hard to find.

Most likely handlebars, pedals, wheels and maybe the seatpost and seat are off... You in for a treat with an 87 ironman. Expert or Master?

Here is my 'Miami Vice'. Bad lighting makes it look purple but it is pink. It has Shimano Sante components except the brake levers (which I am still looking for).

In 1990 I put a new set of Time Criteriums on my Motobecane and I liked them so much I ended up with two pair of Time shoes (one pair is carbon fiber soled) and a spare set of metal cleats (those took some searching on CL). A B to walk in but totally period for very late 80's. Very good float and snug clip in. One pair of shoes are bright blue yellow with a touch of pink...can't hide. Others are gray. I run the Criteriums on the Motobecane and Colnago. Pedals can be had very reasonably on CL though shoes and cleats are harder to come by.

My recently acquired '81 Centurion Super Lemans has all original black leather straps in the chrome clips. I've been riding them ever so slightly loose with good court (bball, tennis, racquet ball) shoes and perfecto! For general riding and touring I do not need to cinch straps down tight and running them ever so slightly loose means you can get in and out easily.

I found the uppers of running shoes to lightly built for straps.

Thanks, I see the addiction has already started.

IMO, C&V bikes are the chit... thrill in acquiring them (as you are finding out now), thrill in fixing them up, and then the super thrill in riding them.. You in for a super treat with the 87 Ironman.. A real treat..

I see all is well here. No need for the old Ironman curmudgeon to say a word....but I will.

I have some 600EX clip pedals, and I've filed off the ridge intended for ye olde school cleats. Asics track shoes work very well, have hard soles but are walkable. Plus, they come in "one for the money" blue suede....

+1
That was the setup on tons and tons of Ironmen back in the day, and get knowing grins whenever seen in current times. I remember getting into it with a guy at the Elizabeth City triathlon, around 1987 or so. I had those same pedals on my roommate's '87 Master (yellow and white) and this guy kept saying "you should go with the newer Looks, they're 27 grams lighter, each." I did the entire tri in running shorts and no top, told him afterwards "I needed to make up the grams, so I skipped the water-logged chamois." Of course, the chafing was, shall we say, memorable.
