One question I have about the fork: did '76 Pros come with fender eyelets? My '78 doesn't have them.

Unless your fork is the same length, the dimension may be different. It appears that the paint is approx. 25% of the length of the fork.
I would think since any size Pro frame is for 700c wheels, that the fork blade length, and hence the amount of paint/chrome would be same? Steerer length would differ of course. Maybe I'm missing something...

I believe the paint/chrome varies with frame size. I did get figured out just waiting for the fork to return from the chrome shop then off to paint.

The stories I've seen say that the European models (Raleigh and Carlton Pros) had fender eyelets since many folks there used fenders. But they were omitted (some suggest installed but removed???) for the USA market since we don't use fenders and don't want "all that weight". My 76 has no eyelets and I've seen very few photos of bike with em. UK and European auction sites sometimes list frames and bikes that have the eyelets. Interesting to surf there.

Looking for answers to your fender eyelet question, I pulled up the 1976 Raleigh USA catalog. I see no mention of a straight up "Raleigh Professional", but do see the "Track", "Team" and "Mark IV" variants. Would yours be the latter or another year or UK sourced maybe?

Raleigh USA Bicycle Catalog for 1976

FWIW, I'm in the bring it back to original school of thought.

Nice bike regardless.

Yes, I think we're talking about the Mark IV. IOW the 'civilian' version, as mine is. The Mark IV's were the multispeed blue/silver models, except for a silver/black version also available early on (1973???). I don't see eyelets on that catalog photo nor on the hardcopies I've printed before.

My '76 Pro has eyelets. Check the photo in my first post.

As for the chrome/paint area fork measurements... I'll get those tonight and post them here.

OK... Now I'm confused.

When I bought this frame, the guy said it was a '76... and Sheldon Brown's Raleigh info pages have a page from the 1976 Catalog with a picture of the Mink Blue/Silver that looks exactly like mine. Decals and all. So I took his word for it.

But the serial number on the BB is A6261... and Sheldon's serial info dates that as a 1966 model. I can't find a single photo of a '66 Pro to compare...

So I went to Kurt's page to compare decals... and it looks as though the decals are like a 70's frame!

I know that Raleigh played fast and loose with serials/decals and that the U.S. versions may have been different than the European models... but a ten year difference would make it a Pro from the first year of production.

What year is this bike??

My brain hurts...

EDIT: Could this be a frame that Raleigh found in the proverbial attic and painted up to sell later?

OR as Sheldon also suggests...

There are several documented cases of '73 and '74 Professionals, Internationals, Competitions and RRAs with "A" serial numbers. Let the color scheme, decals and components be your guide.

My MK IV is a '73; first hand knowledge. It also looks just like the one featured in the 1976 catalog. The serial # is A9xxx. It has "CC" cutout in BB shell.

The good ones...

just kidding. I know '73s and '74s did, not sure when they quit doing it. My '73 RRA has it as well, but a G serial number.

My chainstays and fork should not go together, according to my research. My ('73 MK IV) chainstays should be dimpled because I have the fork with the increased rake, but they're not. I know the history of this bike and I think Dad ordered it from the bike shop rather than buying it off the floor because he got it with Dura-Ace brakes. This would have been the summer of '73.
