I've been wearing cycling caps for close to a decade (i'm young, 33)

I have the following comment on the blog post linker in the OP.

1. It is meant to be a little humorous and basically borrows the tone from the velominati (nothing new).
2. Typical cycling blog citing the golden era as how it should be done when most people (likely author included) do not do things this way.
3. It's not the golden era anymore.
4. Rapha is an elite group who try to dictate fasion.
5. Anyone who lives in a major North American cycling city knows cycling cap fashion HAS changed. It is a fashionable hat today (go to Portland) and fashion is highly regional. Luft is NOT de rigeur and in fact looks silly. Today cycling caps are fitted and come in different size and for the most part DO NOT HAVE LUFT.
6. I wear cycling caps cycling and I have separate ones for wearing while not cycling that are clean and fashionable. I wear my merino cycling cap while skiing but admit Giro failed to make it look like an actual cycling cap so who cares. The small brim is perfect to help shield my eyes and it is the right warmth for high output winter activities.

Here is evidence of the no luft trend in cycling caps:

Cima Coppi ? Wool Cycling Caps

note that they are not designed to have luft and just look around your city or local polo court or in your local bikes shops. The majority, I am sure, so not sport luft.

I know the post is supposed to be funny and I found it mildly amusing but also somewhat boring for it's time tested cycling blog formula and lack of anything new or interesting.

I, too, have a big head, and most caps do not fit me well. Old ones (c. 1975) did, but not so much any more. I have an Atlantis cap from Rivendell that does, and I wear it (usually backwards) under my helmet to absorb sweat when it's hot and help keep my noggin warm when it isn't.

Re cyclotoine's "luft" comment - I never thought of this before, but I bet old hats had "luft" in order to allow (some) riders to wear them over their hairnet helmets. (I never could do that for the same reason most caps these days don't fit me well.

One thing that article clearly proved but did not state explicitly: the first step to looking good in a cycling cap is to be a 20-something year old Roger de Vlaeminck.

I have a couple caps, but I almost never wear them. My head is huge and they always seem too small.

A lot of hipster fashion is predicated on historical or classic fashions and dressing differently often with explanations to back it up (i.e. like the article claiming luft is de rigeur based on historical photos). Luft, it could be argued it more hipster as it would be the more eccentric style trying to emulate classic style and go against the current non-luft style common to most cap wearing cyclists.

So.. exactly to each his own. The fact is the article is more than a little ridiculous and mostly hot air.

I kinda feel like a ****** when I'm wearing my cycling cap, and my wife tells me I look like one. She hates it. But I still like it; I guess I feel like its my little F*** Y** to the world. Every one feeling they like have to conform and all.

I like my Campagnolo cap when I'm cycling.
Off the bike I prefer a hat.

I was constantly being told to put on my "cover" when I was in the military.

Now that I'm 67, I know that people will automatically assume that I'm trying to hide a bald spot if I cover my head. I'm not. I don't have one, but I check the back of my head often.
At 67.

Haha. You're right that no one in Portland (or anyone that I've seen) wears with luft. And I was just thinking "it would be cool to wear my cycling cap with luft!"

I love cycling caps; I always have one on under my helmet; rain or shine. And rules be damned; I wear mine backwards. I have since 1980.

Check out Walz Cycling Caps. They have lots of styles. I like their wool caps. I wear one almost every day, on and off the bike. It's good under the helmet even in the summer.

BTW, those Brooklyn caps are from the Brooklyn Chewing Gum company, which was based in Italy, not Brooklyn.

^^Yup. That doesn't stop every bike shop in Brooklyn from selling the jerseys, caps, socks, gloves etc. One of my all time favorite jerseys.

That was very enjoyable. I remember Gianni standing out in his Gatorade kit at the start line in the Tour DuPont back in the 90's. One of the classier riders of the time.
