A cycling cap under the helmet keeps rain, pouring through the vents, from soaking your head. If you are balding, the cap protects your head from the dreaded zebra-stripe tan. When you wheel your bike into the coffee shop or bar for a post-ride drink, you can take off your helmet and the cap contains your matted and belligerent hair, enough that the proprietor will serve you.
However, the bill of the cap, vestigial though it is, can be a problem. Flipped up, it interferes with the helmet. Flipped down, it forces you to crane your neck severely if you hope to both tuck and see the road (highly recommended). I would like to see a cap with a transparent tinted bill.

Wish I could get a Cycling Cap over my fat head - But I still remember the days I wore a cycling cap over my smelly leather sausage helmet...
Bravo the Cycling Cap - Its the perfect explanation for those shaved legs...

Ah, our new national hero. The guy is such a character. His breakaway style of winning things is just so nice compared to the boring steamroller approach of certain teams and riders. His interviews are hilarious; he has an extremely witty and friendly camera presence (rare in for pro cyclists that can usually manage to get two words in before they have to pause and say uhm for a while). That, and he's got a real "North Holland" style of laconic understatement with the accent to match.

I think that cycling caps are way cool, but I don't where one because I'd look toolishly the fred. I'm not fast enough. On the hottest, most humid days here (when it rains but there are no clouds) I wear a US Navy sailor's hat cuz the helmet is just too much torture. Besides those occasions, I'm in a hemet. I fell on my head once, and now I feed nude without a brain case. In the winter I wear a tuque under my Bell. I wish I could find some welders' caps here. Back in Canada I got them for free at jobbers' wholesalers.

@rootboy, nice collection of caps! Yes it is a GoPro. Guess he likes to see who was there later. Reminds me to take another video of my commute.

My son will have that problem with his big Polish head.
I might be able to stretch it around my melon, but the fit is very tight. Uncomfortably so. I wear a XL or 7 3/4 hat and have never found a comfortable cycling cap -including Walz. Strangely, I have had no problem finding a comfy helmet. I've had XL Giro, Bell, Uvex and Specialized (my favorite for its best ventilation).
