Raleigh Sprite '76-ish, brake pads?
All -
I'm a total newb to this forum and bike repair, but I've acquired a pretty sweet bike - a Raleigh Sprite, which I *think* is from 1976.
It's brake shoes are shot (dried out completely). Does anyone know what kind I should get to replace these, and from where? Ones that I've seen at regular stores appear way too long - these are just simple, small, rectangular things...
(for asking such a newbie question, here's some bike porn showing you what I've got )

In salmon color, those are the ones.Works great with steel rims!
If they 'Squeal' like a pig just scuff up the contact surface.
Whats up with the front brake caliper?

I have just tried the Kool Stop Continentals in Grey - they work pretty well! I haven't a set of Salmon to compare with but they are much better than the black generic ones I tried previously, and I can get them off the shelf locally instead of having to order them online.

I've used the Kool Stop Continentals and the Dia Compe 'Grey Matter' pads on a lot of C&V bikes. The Dia Compe ones stop just as well as the Kool Stops, IMO, but seem to last a lot longer if you've got a rim with rough/pitted sides.
Though I have to say that for sheer resistance to abrasion from bad chrome on a steel rim, I haven't found anything that can stand up to the Jagwire MTB pads I've got on one wheel of my old Schwinn. (I think they're the "Comp Mountain XC" ones.) Doesn't look at all vintage, but I'm hoping to try a set of their "X-Age", which look quite vintage and hopefully use the same indestructible rubber compound.

I think the caliper comment was more directed at "why is the pad so high to meet the rim?"....not usual position. Also, caliper not going back to centre may just be a clean and adjust....

What size are the rims? They look like 27", but the caliper looks like it might be meant for 26x1-3/8 on that frame.
