1958 Blue Raleigh

Except for the seat post, the 1958 Raleigh bicycle I recent purchased is ready for paint prep. It was last painted a powder blue. Using a citrus paint remover the first color I uncovered is a Royal Blue. The overspray on the front fork interior leads me to believe this is the original factory color. I thought they were only painted black, green or coffee. Why not blue?

If it's been repainted, are you 100% sure it's actually a Raleigh, and not just Raleigh-made? Some of their sub-brands came in more exciting colors in the states. Raleigh-made Hercules (though those would be post-1960, I think) are somewhat common in a pretty nice royal blue color, and also red and a weird shade of yellow and probably a few others I forget. Not sure about the pre-'60 brands like Robin Hood, though; not sure I've ever seen a Robin Hood that wasn't black or green. (Edited to add: Whaddya know, there are several blue Robin Hoods on eBay right now... though I'm not sure of the years of any of them.)

Gordo,

Considering where I purchased the bike, that's a real possibility. I'll check that out.

Ankheg,

The "Raleigh" on the seat and down (?) tubes and the head tube tag confirm it's a Raleigh.

Thanks for the reply.

Marc

I really like the blue-red thang on this lenton tourist. Note the "neat and effective" chainguard.

I have one of those, but without the "blue-red thang" going on. I need to get it cleaned up and ride it. Then there's that other Lenton Sports sitting in a box in the basement.
