If it is made of leather and does not have a seatpan, but instead a backplate and a nose, it is a saddle. If It has a seatpan, then it is a seat, regardless of whether it is made of leather or not. That's how I define them, and I think others would probably agree.

One of my pet peeves is when someone doesn't know the difference between a saddle and a seat.

Dog walkers whose using fishing line-like leashes block you from your appointed rounds, then they say "Oh excuse me, tee hee heh" after you come to a screeching halt. Garrote them all.

Yep!

My pet peeve, and it is not necessarily related to C&V, are the countless "the roadie riding that expensive bike and wearing the expensive kit, did not wave back at me" threads.

Seriously people just ride your bikes and stop worrying about riders who don't return your greeting!

OK, I am done for now.

Actually, I do have a real pet peeve, and it has nothing to do with pets.

What bugs me is drivers who are either being too courteous or are too unsure of where the right side of their car is to pass me when they have a perfect opportunity. Instead they'll follow on my left shoulder, holding up the cars behind them, potentially making those drivers mad at me, and keeping me from being able to pull to the left freely if I come up to a pothole or storm drain. Just go, fer goodness sake! The road here can accommodate another half-a-car's width. Go while you have the chance and we'll all breathe easier for a while.

There, I feel better.

True, but at the same time, I hate driving on a narrow-ish 55 mph road with no shoulder other than a 6" rumble strip with blind curves and having a cyclist in front of me waving me around. If the lane is 10 ft or less, I don't feel I can give you your 3 feet and stay safely in my lane even if your right handle bar is near the white line. I'd rather wait a car length back until I can safely pass.

I'll add one about bike lanes and about those knucklehead street sweepers. They shoot all the crap into the bike lane or shoulder and leave it.

Cracks me up but I've heard people define a car seat as a chair. At least they don't call the rear seat a sofa.

When people justify a high price by what they spent too much on. The phrase "I just want back what I put into it..." comes to mind, then accompanied by a list of parts and their prices. Ya you want to get the highest pay out possible, but don't expect for every little item you've bought to add direct value to a bike; especially consumables...

Fair enough, and I don't intend this to be an advocacy discussion. And I do appreciate the courtesy. In the cases I was talking about I'm often riding with my wheel to the right of the white line and the lane is easily wide enough for my 8 ft, let alone just 3. Some drivers just have trouble passing unless they can pull alllllll the way over into the oncoming traffic lane. But then, drivers' courtesy around here sometimes becomes silly - e.g. people w/the right of way sitting tight to hold up 5 cars behind while waving through a driver waiting on a side street. If the side street is such that entering is nearly impossible, then it's a nice thing to do. If not, then it's a traffic obstruction and point of indecision. But drivers often don't see that distinction.

I am often impressed and pleased at the level of courtesy I am shown on my bike commute. Yes, this is Boston! Bike awareness is pretty high. Now if we could just increase the level of conscious law and situational awareness...

Having left Boston a year and a half ago, I miss the awareness of cyclists that exists there. Lanes usually wide, people expecting to see me, and the ability to travel between neighborhoods without feeling like I was taking my life in my hands. Spent a lot of time yelling at drivers during my commute, but I didn't realize how good I had it.

My pet peeve is when my wife tries to count the number of bikes in the garage. How many times do I have to tell her? No counting bikes! This is my own house rule, but she doesn't follow it.

Speaking of ignored rules...Another pet peeve is how race officials turn a blind eye to pro riders drafting illegally--either getting pulled back up to the peloton by their team car or drafting passed/passing riders during a TT. What's the point of the rule if riders make a mockery of it? If you turn a blind eye 99% of the time, it makes the judges seem arbitrary on rare occasions when it is enforced. Sorry you crashed or had a mechanical, but that shouldn't get you a free ride back to the group.

If your T-shirt has the phrase "steel is real" on it then you should destroy it. If it's just a Reynolds logo- or something without the phrase "steel is real" it's fine.
