Missing some of its original bits, most notably wheels, stem, levers, etc. No problem, both of mine are missing several original parts as well!

I think it's an '86 (frame is D6 = April '86), but the headbadge should have the actual assembly date. From what I've seen Schwinn started using Sunrise Red in '86 although it wasn't listed in the catalog until '87.

Araya RM-25 rims were original in '86 and '87.

"240" = two hundred fortieth (August 28) day of "6" = 1986.

Nutted axles. Maybe the 1986 had nutted axles, both my 1987 and 1989 were QR, as is the catalog scan from Stan.

'86 was supposed to have quick-release hubs according to the catalog ('85 was bolt-on), but as other components seem to have been changed on this bike maybe these were as well. For example the rims were supposed to be "hard anodized" (gold-brown in color) versions of the RM-25, and these don't look like that. Another telling feature is that Schwinn changed the frame geometry from a 70-70 deg. head-seat tube in '85-'86 to 70-72.5 in '87-'89. I believe when they made that change they also deleted the brazed-on cable guides under the bottom bracket, as my early '87 model has a plastic bolt-on guide.

It's an '86 model with some parts that appear to have been changed.

I'd say probably $150 to $200 in that condition. I'm waiting to see how much this apparently unridden '86 model will go for: Schwinn Cimarron 21 Speed Custom Porsche Red Really One of A Kind 1985 MTB | eBay

Despite what the seller says I believe that is another '86 like yours, also in Sunrise Red. The only thing special about it is the original unused condition, but that alone does indeed make it special.

as a reference, I picked up my sunset red 87 for 250, and it looked to have been ridden very little, and was all original. They are indeed nice riding bikes, albiet a little heavy. I really love mine.

I too saw the ebay bike; there's nothing "one-off" about the color, and they also stated that the bike was built at the Waterford shop; I don't buy that at all. Looks just like mine did before I converted it. That said, it's a pretty bike and someone will enjoy it.

Enjoy your bike- it's cool!

Im watching that as well, I also think its Sunrise Red, or another option may be that it really is a Porsche Red paint, that Schwinn maybe matched it closely for subsequent years and names it Sunshine Red

Geez, that seller is full of B.S. isn't he?

Still a nice bike, if NOS turns your crank.
