I don't drink from any of these. They are just props now for taking pics of my C&V bikes. I presently use a new Specialized wide mouth bottle for drinking on my rides.

I do drink from plastic bottles, old and new. But I would not blame anyone for refusing to. There are theories, not yet confirmed, that it is one of the most cancer causing things. I've started to move food out of plastic as soon as I get it home, to reduce risk. My wife had cancer. She is cancer free now, thank God, but she is cautious, and who am I to say it's unnecessary? Make your own decision. Just because we've come this far doesn't mean our lack of caution was OK. Some of us don't make it this far and get cancer young.

Some of my plastic water bottles probably ARE forty years old Besides, I wouldn't doubt that forty year old plastic is purer then the stuff that's churned out in China today

As far as Garden Hoses go (and I'm 62),I agree with you. BUT...the new ones have a label that says DO NOT DRINK from it. It actually says may cause Cancer. They're not real rubber like in the "old" days.

For me the issue is not how old is the bottle, but how long has the water been in it. I would not drink water that's been stored in an old plastic water for more than an hour or two. Or from a new one, if it's more than a day or two. Water that's been stored in a stainless steel bottle tastes good for far longer.

All seriousness aside though, consider a new Specialized bottle. They have a glass inner lining which keeps the water from picking up a plastic taste. It works quite well.

Meh. most of my bottles are 10 years or more. Replace em when they break. Who cares about that black gunk that's hard to wash off the inside of the spout and the bottom?
the most important thing for leaching chemicals is how long the water lasts in the bottle. For me, never more than an hour (and then it's refilled from a handy vending machine as soon as I pass one). Japan is full of those, stocked with sports drinks that taste way better than Gatorade. Or just Heed powder in pure water.

I usually use stainless these days.
BPA is a concern mainly with polycarbonate. Old cycling bottles were not made of polycarbonate.
But they still contained, as most plastics do, plasticizers that are as probably as bad as BPA. And maybe even worse.
I use plastic in my life. Old and new. Though I never put it in the microwave anymore.

On further review, it would depend on whether the things in it involved barley or perhaps grapes.

Forty year old whiskey might be darned good! But if it were 40 year old wine, kept in one of these un-corked, it may be better used to clean rust from bike parts.

To me, the real question, is why would one want to drink from a 40-year-old water bottle? Each their own I guess, but the newer insulated bottles are pretty nice.

If you're at all concerned about drinking from an old bottle for health reasons, why not just spring for a new one, they don't cost very much.

One of my favorites:
I rarely drink out of plastic bottles but I do have a small collection for display or used on the wall hangers. FUJI water bottles are always appreciated. Most of the time I use stainless steel or aluminum but always empty them out after each ride. Anybody have an Austro Daimler water bottle out there?

Forum member Zieleman once had an interesting story on an old bottle simply dissolving in his hands when filled with water. Can't be good.
