What DOESN'T SELL at a garage sale!

I just picked up two bikes from a seller, they were left over from her garage sale. Both were compelling deals, but both were incomplete. It amazes me sometimes what deals people pass on.

I would love to have seen the EIGHT bikes she sold at the garage sale. But I am more than happy with the left overs.

I'll load a couple of pictures later, one was a 1985 Trek 460, missing a front wheel and brake calipers, the other was a 1989+/- Miyata 1000 LT, missing a rear wheel.

Who passes on a Miyata 1000 LT at a garage sale**********??

Please don't confuse ebay "asking" prices with "selling" prices. Many sellers never get their ask price. some are far from it. Value is determined once an item actually SELLS. Its easy enough to check SOLD prices.

No one who knows and appreciates what a Miyata 1000 is. That is just a few. Most folks are just looking for a bike that works. No rear wheel, bike doesn't work. Great finds for you, because you do have that knowledge and appreciation.

What's the story behind the sale? My first concern would be that it was a poorly locked bike. If I got something like... selling for a friend or my son left them behind, I'd have to think twice.

I live in the Twin Cities.

People here are bike crazy. A 1000 would get a fair amount of love, regardless of condition.

But I hear what you are saying. Lots of folks wouldn't touch these older bikes I suppose.

Just more for the rest of us.

How about a 1961 Masi? Story about an early Masi, acquired (for free, no less) from a yard sale where it sounds like it didn't sell. I haven't decided yet if I even believe it.

Nice score. Maybe the other buyers ran out of money. The Miyata looks well taken care of.

That miyata 1000 is sweet. Paint looks to be in good shape as well.

The frame on the 460 is no slouch. The TT1 tubes are quality framework tubes.

Nice find on that Miyata!

Actually, it doesn't amaze me what others may pass on. Rarely do I have the time to target an estate or garage sale and its usually just a spur of the moment thing. Doesn't matter what caliber or brand, but bikes without air in the tires, cobwebs, garage dust stuck on oily, greasy bottom brackets and drivetrain are a lost cause in the eyes of most. The majority call them just an uncomfortable old 10 speed.

As usual, junk to most but treasures to me
I've found items for a few bucks or piled for the dumpster that turned out to be worth $$$$$. Small, odd pieces and parts for rare old machinery that nobody would recognize. A fave was an old jumpsuit some thought was mechanics overalls but turned out to be a rare vintage auto racers suit. Scrounging further and found a leather helmet from the same era. I like finding oddity and rare car parts that make no sense to most. Usually these are items I like to keep or use and something I couldn't or would go out of my way to buy.

Nice scores there. Hard to figure sometimes.

This Bianchi sat at a garage sale for 3 days and there were no takers. 56cm, SLX frame, all Campy, trashed seat, flat tires. It was priced at $200. The seller said a couple of people said they were coming back, but never did. As a result, the seller put it on ebay with a BIN well under $200. A forum member tipped me and I was able to snag it. Local pickup.

I find so little good stuff at garage sales, I hardly go out anymore.
But I did find this at an estate sale a few years ago.

Man, that 1000 is my size too, I'm jealous . I recently passed on 2 Univega Nuovo Sports with mostly steel components and rims for $40. Take that!

Thanks for that link. The pics of the finished clone are quite inspirational.

I would. And I'm one of the 0.0001% of the general public that doesn't see it as a broke old bike.

I picked up a MASI once at a garage sale. It was day TWO of the sale. I also picked up a nice bike work stand at the same sale. Bike had collectible Bullseye hubs on it. Workstand needed a ten cent washer to fix its clamp mechanism.

Around these parts, you won't find ANY bike that's decent at a garage sale. They're all cheap mountain and kids bikes. The rest are ridiculously priced road bikes from flippers on Craigslist. In Ann Arbor, people are smart, they know what a good bike is!

I seen an heard just about every reason why nice are available. Everything from someone moving to people who took bikes as payment for services rendered.

One of my better acquisitions was from a guy who traded some VW rims for a ti mtb. He never rode the mtb and wanted sell it to get money for a kayak. I researched how much kayak's cost and offered him significantly lower than his asking price but just enough to get a nice mid-level kayak. We meet up in a Sports Authority parking lot!!

All we have at garage sales are beat up rusted dime store MTBs.
