Francophiles: Help ID this Peugeot and help with paint match

I got the craving for a bike suitable for the Strada Bianche. This means room for 700x30 tires with fenders, center-pull brakes, pre1975, and something with some association with the Grand Tours of a bygone era.

I saw this Peugeot that Rocketsauce posted: https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vi...l#post17249439

It's now arrived in Chicago. It will fit perfectly, it's dent free and ready for a new life.

Can anyone ID it? It lacks a Reynolds 531 sticker, but it's as light as my 1972 Paramount.

Also, any suggestions for cleaning the frame and touching up the paint?

Got any photos of the head badge? That's a good way to ballpark the date of a Pug.

Decals look like early 1970s. Possibly pre-1973 or so since the ends of the downtube decals are square, not slanted. Black Nervex lugs at the head tube and the chrome on the stays are consistent with higher-end frames like Peugeot PX-10s.

Nice bike!

Fancy Nervex lugs, chrome sox at both drops, inoxydable decal, early 1970's PX10. The 531 decals flake like crazy on a PX10. Non abrasive Barkeepers Friend on a wet sponge will take care of the rust.

Check out Testor's model paints for touch up. They have a French blue.

Very cool! Don't ask me why, but I really seem to prefer the ride quality of the metric 531 tubing. This should be a joy to ride!

Michael, Thats a super nice Peugeot PX10 and I would venture to say it's a 71. The decals are similar to mine, the right rear dropout has the thumb holder to center the rear wheel, the chrome on the rear stays and fork is similar to mine. The Campagnolo components are worth more then what you paid for the Peugeot PX10! My Peugeot PX10 Ser 1861223, check yours should be in the area. Mike

Here's a some photos to compare.

With original wheels.

Love the way it handles for a 43 year old bike!

Original paint and decals, stored for 35 years by the previous owner!

I predict you'll like this. I had a couple of PX-10's, and I liked them a whole lot. Mine were a 1979 and a 1980, so I think they had shorter wheelbases than yours, but both designs are both nice.

I've got one of these also and haven't found a blue to match - still looking for a paint to match.

I concur with everyone else. Not much is original so hard to nail down the date.... 1970-73. Maybe '74 depending on where the Reynolds 531 was, on the seat tube would be pre-'74. On the down tube would be '74 and later.

Michael, you will need to get the French 531 decals, unfortunately their on Ebay and are reproductions. The seat post is 26.4 mm or 26.6, that's going to be tough to find at a reasonable price, unless you go off brand. The touch up paint, Tom Thumbs in Evanston has a huge selection (take your Peugeot with), but move some where on Milwaukee ave. Mike

Cool bike. It has one of those drop outs without a derailleur tab. Have you decided how you are going to mount a derailleur on it? Or are you going to track down a simplex derailleur for it?

I believe that the inoxdable decal would be lower if the Reynolds decal was originally on the seat tube. They moved the Reynolds decal to the down tube in 1974. I believe that they changed the decals in 1975. That's why I say it's probably a 1974 PX10E. There was also a PX10LE in 1974, but it had plain Prugnat lugs, among other differences. The gold edged black seat stay cap was also a 1974 feature.

My suggestion is not to do a proper restoration. Just do whatever is practical. That includes either modifying the derailleur hanger or finding a derailleur that fits, whichever is easier. I suspect the modification will be easier.

The frame is versatile, and you can equip it various ways.

You're recommending that he butcher the hanger on a PX10? I think that's a lousy idea. I certainly regret that it was done to mine.

I think I saw a Simplex Criterium on Ebay for a reasonable price. That would have been the original equipment. They are excellent derailers.

It is a matter of taste. Both approaches seem reasonable to me, especially since you say one can get the original derailleur at a reasonable price.

+ 1. I have no issue with a claw derailleur or modifying the drop out.

I have a big issue w/ a claw mount, unless you can do it w/o molesting the Simplex tab, but I have no problem w/ a bit of judicious retapping or even shaping of the hanger. I found it very easy to hang a short cage SunTour Cyclone II on my 1980 PKN-10, but I do not know whether Simplex had changed its dropout design by then. You can always mix and match derailleurs and mounting bolts, as well.
