'82 Pug PH10S - Getting a new headset & handlebars?

Hey all,

I have an '82 Pug PH10S that I'm using as a commuter. The drop bars simply aren't comfortable, and I want to swap them out for straight or mustache bars. Problem is, I don't know what size my bars and/or headset are, or what some good sources are. I'm located in the UK, which makes things more difficult when it comes to finding affordable brands that ship.

Bonus candid photo of the bike:

IIRC, my PH10S of the same vintage had a French spec headset (Chromed steel, no name, but most likely a base model Stronglight), and stem (Atax quill, 22mm diameter).... NOS french sized headsets are still available out there, Not cheap, but not crazy expensive either as it seems like there's actually less and less people out there looking for such, so French sized and threaded components tend to linger a long time unsold at eBay.....

Hm. Any ideas for sources of compatible stems and handlebars with the stock headset?

If you know (or can find out) the diameter of your current stem, just shop that way. My guess is it's a 22.0mm diameter just going by the two older Peugeots I have on hand right now. (1979 and 1984, I think) I would think a lot of bike co-ops in the UK would have a lot of this size on hand (also eBay) since Peugeots were fairly common there. Less common, though still possible, would be finding an old Schwinn stem in that size.

After you find out what's available, get the one that gets you closest to the position you want to be in.

I just took apart a 1982 Peugeot PKN-10 this morning and I don't think there is any uniquely French about the bike.

If you want to try to chop and flop the bars to start, that is the poor man's way to see if you like it. You can reuse the levers to if you remove the turkey wings.

I believe the PKN10 had a 531 tubed frame, so maybe it's no surprise that you didn't find it so "Tout French" when you worked on it. In contrast, the PH10s had Peugeot's Carbolite 103 frame tubes so it might have totally different threading and size requirements for components from the PKN's....

+1 on measuring. Key measurements are:

Headset: is it French threaded?
Stem/bars: Steerer diameter would be 22.0 if French, and 22.2 if anything else. Clamp area would likely be 25.0 if French, or 25.4 if most anything else except Italian (26.0 or 26.4)

If your current headset and stem are good, and the clamp is 25.4 then you will have many options of new bars. Have fun.
