Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Headset for CDale R4000

Hello All,

I was wondering if anyone would know what size headset (Is it 1 1/8"?) I need for my 99 R4000. Right now I have a CODA stem that must be old school. The stem and headset are one solid piece. I need a shorter stem, so that why I am changing it out.

Thanks

1" quill type stem and it needs a 1" headset. Yes it's old school but very functional. It's going to be difficult to find a stem of decent quality new but should be easy to find a used one on Ebay or similar. You may not need a new headset unless it's in poor condition. Just grease the upper and lower bearings and see how it feels.

No, they are separate components.
As Bluechip said, your headset is probably fine. It's a 1" "Threaded" headset, not the newer "threadless" style.
Plenty of quill stems out there of various brands & sizes. Make sure you get one with a handlebar clamp diameter that matches your bars. 2 different options (25.4 mm & 26.0 mm, I think ?).

Edit: Looking at VintageCannondale catalogs, you have Cinelli Nerve bars, 26.0

So,

I am going to go with a quill stem adapter, which will let me use a more modern threadless riser stem. Will a 25.4mm riser stem work with my 26.0mm Cinelli nerve bars?

It can be done but it's not a good idea. Why not upgrade to modern bar/stem combo since you switching to a threadless adapter? Other wise what's the point. Stay with the quill stem.

Whats a good bar/stem combo then?

My CODA quill stem is way too long at 127mm, so this is why I am changing it out and since I have to change it out anyway, then I figured I would go with a thread less more modern stem.
