Catching up on the Tour and starting work on the rear shifting of the Raleigh.
The wound metal RD housing with an added liner is gone for of some of the same Jagwaire as the rest of the bike. That housing worked for indexed, but sometimes hesitated to shift into the smallest 13t sprocket. Quirky.
While things are apart I took the opportunity to add some Alloy pulleys and will break in a new bargain ultrasonic cleaner on the chain. I have a few different step-down ferrules in the stash, but none a great fit.
Here's the start, reworked the right ferrule into the left:
I tried to find a way to use the Dremel as a handheld lathe, and could, but in the end channel locks and a file worked well enough.
More unnecessary work on the way - but I have what I need to do this in-house, and it's enjoyable.

After three weeks of no rain--which has been WONDERFUL--there is a slight chance of it coming down tomorrow, albeit in slight amounts at best. My Ross, dedicated rain bike, had many of her parts donated to another bike. Built her up with parts tonight and went on a test ride. So many buzzings and rattlings when there weren't any before! Also, the 7-speed Sunrace FW that I got used has disappointed me again. Sigh... So all of those must be addressed, or accepted for just a day. At least she looks great!

I have never bought a bike with a stuck seatpost. Last night I was hellbent on making a seatpost fit into a seat tube. I used grease, my body weight and a big @ss mallet to insert seatpost. It's only in about 1.5". Yes, I know that was very stupid and a rookie move.
Mr. VV and I, together cannot get it out. I don't have a big bench vise, so off to my nearby LBS...
They're a Trek dealer and the bike is my 1984 Trek mixte.
Crap! I know better than to do that.

Oh it's a single bolt design. Old one has those bolts on each side. Can rarely get them tight enough.

@noglider - it took 2 men about 35 seconds of one holding the front end of the bike and the other straddling the rear wheel and twisting. No charge. I felt I should buy something but they happened to be out the particular bell I would have purchased. They measured my seatpost opening with one of those graduated rods. Apparently it's 26.6, not 26.8!

I bumped the stem on the Colnago from 110 to 120, seems like it might be the Goldilocks length for this bike. Only one way to find out.

My bikes are demanding attention. I wanted to ride the Centurion to work tomorrow but the rear tire was flat. A week ago I'd noticed it flat and found a pinhole leak at a seam in a new tube. This time I found another, same seam. Put in another tube, one with five patches already. Pumped it up. a minute later it went BANG! Made my ears ring, I can tell you. Rats, grabbed a different bike, the UO-8 just to be ornery.
The other day I had reason to look at the Bianchi's drive train. I found this:
Time to replace that big ring. Well, it has seen a lot of miles. Wish I could find another like it, VeloOrange compact double, 48T, a crank they no longer sell and for which they have no more rings. Maybe the reason they don't sell it is because it was made of soft aluminum.
The other day I had reason to look at the Bianchi's drive train. I found this:

I snapped some pictures of current C&V rides in their most up-to-date form (and hopefully mostly-permanent form).
Figuring out potential solutions to the potential need of fleet reduction from nine to seven or so. Logic, reason, groupset allocation, all of it running about it my head as I mentally sort out possibilities. This would see my venerable Ross 294S perhaps off to someone else, and either my Super Le Tour or laying-around-as-a-frameset '78 Nishiki Competition taking up rain bike duties. I am still a bit conflicted as the hand-made Ross has been stellar. I do know that I will be selling my '83 970, as good as that is.
Picked up a few used components today, among them M747 SPD mountain type pedals (stellar stuff, my second pair snagged!) and Soma Highway One bars.

I've continued to wiggle the Schwinn Voyager thru its renovation. Much rust around the BB and some in the chain stays so I made a cardboard through, lined with plastic sheet and mixed up an oxalic acid bath. Let the lower frame sit in that overnight then rinsed it off and set in the hot car all day. CRC rust prevention in the stays and rust converter on much of the BB shell and the stays. Getting ready to paint that sector. Had an old can of paint for a Plymouth from my past - pretty close match. Good enough as its hidden by the cranks and my big feet. Cleaning parts and thinking about a sealed BB unit as the original BB has pitted races.

I bought a bike recently that needed a total overhaul, which I figured would make a nice Winter project. I am on vacation now and it is raining, so I now have that same bike 100% stripped down. The parts are soaking in separate tubs of degreaser and CLR. I am not at the beach as planned, but I am still having a good time with this. I will just have to look for a new bike-related Winter project.
