I had my annual physical last week and according to my doctor I lost an inch. At least it wasn't a foot.

Two doors down from my house in the middle of the street I found a 1/2" diameter 2' long drill bit. I took it back to my garage and re-headed out on my ride.

OK...I started to say I "found my sanity"...which I do on almost every ride...but...as an excuse to tell a ironically funny story...

I found a "housewife of Atlanta (HOA)..." on one of my rides...and, no, I am not referring to my wife...although she regularly watches the show!

I was tooodling along on my local Greenway, when...WHOOSH...the "HOA" goes roaring by on her triathlon styled bike. Ms. HOA is in, of course, spandex shorts with a white halter top. Now, this particular summer had been quite wet in our wonderful Southern city. So...as she goes by (WHOOSH)...I notice that she is talking on her cell phone!

So, as she pulls a bit further into the distance and starts to come into the part that I refer to as the "shi-cayne" (no idea about spelling here)...but it is an S type turn in the greenway...and...yes, you guessed it...talking on that phone, going fast...and not paying attention...right off the paved path she goes...into some DEEP black mud...

Front wheel grabs in...and LAUNCH TIME! Over the handlebars she goes...

OK...so I am a Southern Guy...which means that manners were beaten into me...so, I slow down to stop and ask..."are you ok?" She gives me this withering look, standing there in her now "less than white" halter top...phone launched another 15 feet into the mud...and front wheel sunk in to the hub. You know how she replies? "Leave me the H-E- Double Hockey Sticks alone!"

I think to myself...well, ok lady...and settle back into my slightly more than 12 mph pace...and head down the Greenway...chuckling to myself something about Karma being a...well...you guessed it.

So...in one of my rides...

I found a Housewife of Atlanta that helped me find my southern gentility and my sense of humor...all in all...another wonderful day in the saddle...

Today I found a nice carpenters hammer, but I wasn't going to put a muddy hammer in my trunk bag, (and didn't need another one), so I left it.

Over the years I've found: gasoline powered post hole digger, Shoei motorcycle helmet, many sets of keys, several wallets with credit cards intact, point and shoot Kodak camera, many hand tools, cash ($87), lots of lead wheel weights (picked up for a coworker who casts lead fishing weights), Apple Iphone, cell phones, many baseball caps, kitchen knives, I always pickup nails and sheetrock screws (lots of good karma as a result-hopefully) I always pass up underwear and used condoms, piss bottles too. YMMV!!

Some years ago my wife and I were riding our road bikes , just heading uphill on a country road about 2 miles from our house. Suddenly we came upon what appeared to be a freshly hit/killed large turkey that must have been hit by a car. As I dismounted my bike to check it out, an old pick up truck pulled up behind us. A middle aged fellow got out, looked at the turkey, then at us and asked, " Are you gonna take it ?" I was rather flabbergasted, to say the least: here we are on our super light road bikes, dressed in cycling clothing, with no racks, bags, or waistpacks. And we were going to carry it how ?
I told him , no, and he picked it up, put it in the pick up truck, and left. I think of that whenever I hear the term road kill.

Good Oakleys are worth it. I once left some Factory Pilots on a counter at a race. The lady who took them was married to a friend and teammate. She wore them to one of the next events. I got them back, and our relationship was never the same. Didn't matter.

Stuff that falls out of pickup trucks in the South: hand tools, pocket knives, and lots of fried chicken bones. In my experience, the chicken bones stop somewhere just north of Baltimore.

A buddy of mine , back in the '90s, wrote a song about finding loopy strings of busted cassette tapes on the side of the road and wondering what had been recorded on them. They disappeared, and then for a while I would find CDs (hardly ever playable, but I do remember being introduced to both the Judybats and the Nappy Roots that way). Now the CDs are mostly gone. On the whole, I'm glad the world is that much less full of plastic. That particular kind of plastic, anyway.

One time in the early aughts I found a copy of The Perks of Being a Wallflower (which I hadn't heard of at the time), with a small photo of a pretty teenage girl stuck in it. Somebody's teen drama playing out...

Mountain bike riding I have found a couple of near new moisture wicking style shirts, and a socket set.

Road riding I found 3- 13mm wrenches on three different occasions, enough of empty Nitrous oxide cartridges to fill a large yogurt container, a CO2 tire inflater, a pristine pair of Maui Jim sunglasses in a case and about $1700 scattered on the road (turned it into the Sheriff and after 90 days they gave it back!). Also found a deer carcass that my wife asked me to return to and saw off the antlers for some project she was working on; of course it had been tossed out of the road and into a mess of Poison Ivy; fortunately my 15 YO son at the time is immune to the affects.
