Orval Commuter bike
OK, not so C&V, but this is my only posting home. I re-badged my Surly Cross-Check as my favorite Trappist Belgian beer; Orval!
Awesome 3-D headbadge in metal by Jen Green. She really does incredible work.

Love it.
Sure beats the Surly Straggler I bought for our son for first impressions.
I really like what Surly does though and you have added tons of personal identity and charm.

Thanks Gomango. I have trouble leaving any bike "as is," and adding this touch was just enough to make me happy to climb on it at 6 AM in sub-freezing weather. It does get a double-take on the trail now and then.
For an out-of-the-box bike the Surlys are about as do-everything as you can get. They're not awesome at anything, but they sure do hold up and don't feel improper in most any setting really. This one is actually my second, I keep the other at the in-laws in Oregon for riding when we visit. As much as I love my vintage steeds, it's nice to have a bike with all modern kit that can be back on the road with parts from almost any decent shop.

After seeing yours, I am tempted to do the same thing this spring. Maybe I'll add a little zip to my Fargo.
Btw That headbadge is super classy. Man, she does nice work.

Very cool. Creative, classy top shelf art.
Fwiw My Walter Croll is begging for a Jen Green badge.
When Sloar refinished the frameset, that was the plan.
I simply have too many projects to get to that, but the day will come.

Ha! Great thing you started there Poprad, might become a cult of some kind. And that headbadge... otherworldly. We had something resembling an Orval shortage here, during the winter. Not that it became unavailable, but about 1 pub out of 3 ran out. (clenches teeth) Now I know were it went. These guys (the trappists in Orval) just refuse to adapt to the increasing demand and brew in larger quantities. Makes you wonder if they're real catholics...

Hey CMAW! Great to hear from you, and yes, I did bring a few cases of that amber liquid gold back with me. I have found it here, but it's usually for around $11 a bottle, so it was worth shipping home. Of course, there were also 4 cases of Westy 12 and some mixed stuff from other abbeys and DeStruise.
If you find yourself coming to the U.S. definitely hit me up!

Is that your new home state on the sticker, Oregon? Not much cobbles there I suppose... Looking at that headbadge again, it's funny how in it's new context the ring in the trouts beak becomes... some special washer, the kind that instantly finds it's way into the one crack in your floor boarding. Thanks for the invite, I'll sure remember it!

That goes for you, Italumin and StevenC alike. Any of you guys would be welcome guests. We call Washington DC home for now, but my heart's always back in Oregon. I'll be heading either there or back to the Benelux when I retire in 4 years. I'm already looking for a NATO gig or the like....
Oh, and spot on about the ring. I think of it as the special ridged lockwasher for brakesets that always goes missing. That's what I need; a shop fish to find lost small parts!
