I enjoyed watching it, as well. I especially likes stage 5 and 7. Five ended in my neighborhood, and it's always fun to see it on familiar turf. Seven because....well....actually I didn't enjoy that as much. Those are the same roads that we ride in the "barely publicized" C/A GMR rides. They did in 12 minutes what it takes me two hours to do. So demoralizing!

We were at a sports bar for breakfast yesterday. I was watching the race on my phone not knowing they had it on a TV behind me. I did figure it out before the end. I was probably the ONLY person in the bar watching it and actually interested in the results.

I have to admit, I thought the final stage at the ski lifts at Baldy would have been more of a grind. Did you you see how fast they were climbing that hill? Geez, the way @TrojanHorse describes it, it's really steep. Pfff. Maybe it was steep. The ToC guys all slowed down to around 22 mph at the end of the climb...AND they broke a sweat!
Guess I can't bust his chops too much. He made it, I did not.
The worst two climbs I've done this year in terms of pain were the Palm Springs Tramway (3.7 miles, 1,858 feet, avg 10% but it gets up to 15% at the end) and the Mt Baldy Ski Lifts (4.8 miles, 2,162 ft, avg 9% and again, the end of the route is 15%). Baldy came after a pretty healthy day of climbing already, so that was extra painful.
Both were slooooooow going.

HP, PJ and I headed up to the village, got some water and decided we should try to make it up to the vaunted ski lifts (the Tour of California finished at the ski lifts 2 years ago - if a bunch of skinny pros can do it, surely we can as well?) So after 25 miles and about 3400 feet of climbing, what's another 5 miles and 2,200 feet? Some obviously gifted cycling ladies in the village were talking up the road and giving us tips (you can recover a little bit in the switch backs. no really , the grade drops from 15% to 13% for about 7 feet. What a recovery!) I actually walked the last 200 feet.

So put your new cassette on and let's get out there, now that you know how easy it is.

Speaking of Carbo Loading - I think it's time for me to start dieting in earnest. I'm sick of being "pretty fast for a big guy". Last night I moved up to the faster group in my club, and did well, but the main difference being I'm now getting 3 times as many what I call "chubby compliments" than before. The trouble with these chubby compliments is that the usual cyclist revenge of "blowing past them on the hills" only increases their size and magnitude. "Wow you're f***ing fast for a lard arse" for example.
Maybe I should start riding a hybrid.

Possibly, if you were to get a 7" triangular mirror, and mount it to your helmet, they might be distracted by that, and become a guy who is "pretty fast in spite of that 7" triangular mirror"...to be safe I'd stick two of those wide angle stick on mirrors on it too. Heck go ALL OUT and put one of those Deer whistles on it too.

You need racks, fenders, baggy shorts, a hydration pack and panniers. Then drop them on a hill

Tons and tons of practice, then drop them on a hill while doing one legged drills.
