Finally broke the 6-hour century
Yesterday was a good day on the bike. Warm, sunny and almost no wind. After two years and getting close a few times, I finally broke the 6-hour century.
- Total 107.6 miles
- Average speed 16.8 mph
- Top speed 28.4 mph
- 100 mile segment time 5:56:12
- Max heart rate 178 bpm
- Ave heart rate 156.5
- 3 hr 29m in HR Zone 3
- 2 hr 21m in HR Zone 4
- 1044 feet climbing/descent
- Max grade 5.4%
I'm currently 50 years old and 230# riding a steel endurance bike with a CF fork that weighs in at about 26# with saddlebag and full water bottles.

That's great. Gives me something to aim for in the Century ride I'm doing next month. Fastest Century for me is 6h 11m.

Yes, solo. There are few cyclists in my small town and far fewer who will do a century for fun. The only group rides I do are 20-30 milers with a couple of clubs out of the Fargo area. It doesn't bother me though. I find hours riding alone through the countryside provide a much needed mental break and time to sort out my thoughts. I've been shooting for a six-hour century for a couple of years now and have come close a few times but everything came together yesterday for a great ride. I set my personal record, figured out routing issues for the upcoming Tour de Cure and for our EMS service to get around some road construction, saw a moose and several deer, and enjoyed every mile.
Thanks for the kind words. I wish you well on your century next month.

Congrats!
I have to say, the flattest century I ever did was 4,000 feet and I missed the 6 hour mark by about 6 minutes. I wouldn't know what to do with 1,000 feet.

A very remarkable ride, especially riding solo. I have broken the 6 hour century a couple times, but only when riding with a group of much younger riders that encouraged me throughout the ride (and also enjoyed the benefit of the "draft"). Don't know that I am disciplined enough to do that on my own. Congratulations!

I'll never come close to that. I'm impressed. Averaging 16-17mph over a full hour is my top end. Well done.

It's not a century (75 miles), but take a look at Tour de Pines if you haven't. It starts/ends in Itasca State Park. A bit of a drive, especially for me coming from the cities, but well worth it, and only about 90 minutes from the Fargo area.

I've done both the Tour de Pines and Headwaters 100 in years past. Great rides in a beautiful area. The Itasca area is one of our favorites for biking, hiking and canoeing. If you haven't been there recently, large sections of bike trail thorugh the park have been added or renovated over the past year.

Big Congrats, GravelMN! Any chance you were riding with a steady tailwind to average 16.8 mph?
I'm with you, I enjoy the solitude of riding solo - I find great relief in knowing I'm not slowing anyone down nor am I being slowed down by others. I've been training for the last year (-ish) to ride my first solo century, hoping to finish within 8 hours, any longer and I'd probably just bail out.

Excellent job m8. I don't think I will be doing that anytime soon.
