NO wonder she could not drive it, the thing is all sideways :-).

He's asking for prayers for his bicycle family at Newport Bicycle now. I almost thought it was his actual family that we have been told to expect to suffer something requiring him to stop the ride across America. Maybe this tho delays getting the wife her bike? And thus delays start again?

They are no doubt thinking "Don't ride away mad, just ride AWAY" hehe.

Due to this thread now on every ride at the 5 mile point I develop a very strong craving, at first I did not know what it was, then I realized it was for a Kobe beef burger and every single appetizer on the menu, but I just ignore it, and ride another 15-25 miles and it is all ok then :-).

I was just thinking about a challenge that this weekend we all commit to riding as far as he has this entire trip. I was hoping that would be encouraging, however, everyone riding to the end of the driveway and back isn't really that big of a deal!

The end of the driveway would take 7 lbs of beef jerky, 14 cliff bars, and 3 liters of coca cola :-).Getting to the end of the driveway is 90% of the battle :-).

No doubt. Even though I am sure part of their reason for donating was the publicity, I strongly suspect that they thought he would actually ride somewhere if he had a bike.

There are so many issues with this trip, it is beginning to look like he did have a plan... it just never involved more than some token riding. He's probably trying to figure out what to do now that someone gave him a bike, since that wasn't part of his plan.

Today he used the wording "now I can finish my ride" or something to that effect. He definitely used the word "finish" which is just bizarre, since he still hasn't even started yet.

Thank you for this. I've been becoming annoyed by this this thread and the clyde bashing, and have been having issues coming up with a way to express my displeasure civilly.

Agreed.

Some posts wander away from the obvious scam being perpetrated and into fat jokes or food intake judgments. I think if I was a 'newb' who was north of 300 lbs and was reading this thread, i'd look elsewhere for support less be judged for how I look, how far I can ride, or what I eat.

I rode 30 tonight, I reckon I'm good for the next month.

Had a massive blowout too - thanks Caltrans. They closed off Lakeview (by the Santa Ana River Trail) and detoured all the bikes on to a side road with tons of crap. BLAM! Couldja at least SWEEP the detour route before forcing everybody over there? Sheesh. Trashed the tire too.

with regard to tone of thread and how future visitors to this forum might view it...

I bet each of us would really like him to succeed and I'm not even talking ride all the way across America...I'm talking getting his life together and following thru on something he started for once. To me that means riding as much as he is able as many days as possible. Take control of his eating in a manner that helps him achieve better health regardless of weight.

That said, his history as stated by him in his own journal and the lack of movement and his seeking media attention and funds from public before he'd really done anything of substance to achieve the stated goal...and fact one goal has been MET (wife back as far as everyone knows) so where is motivation to truly continue the quest? He's gained fame, a legion of inspired (inspired by what exactly I'm not sure), a free new bike and $10K. Not bad for a few months.

He has likely made it harder for someone else to get support from others who might truly have prepared to take on such a challenge to improve their life or the life of others.

Having followed this no-motion bikewreck since it first popped up on a cycling FB group several weeks ago, it's a relief to find this thread. Not only are the salient deets clearer (Really? A total of only about 60 miles in about 2 months???), but it's nice to find out that I'm an Athena.

I've been participating on both Eric's FGAA page and the "Fit With" page, and getting more and more frustrated with the lack of progress and the baffling excuses for same. It'll be devastating to some of the folks on the Fit With page if/when they find out that this inspiring cross-country ride is a scam, sham, or a foolish fantasy. I'm one of the ones that's been urging him to use Strava/MapMyRide/Any free app to track his progress and improvement.

He doesn't need more gadgets, but they're useful timewasters, I guess. I think he's got a speaker on his handlebars, in addition to the phone mount, plus some batteries or flashlights taped to his top tube. So maybe he listens to music or the radio all day?

Having read this thread in one swell foop, did I miss where someone pointed out the Doctor Who license plate frame on his trailer? It says "My other car is a TARDIS," so maybe that's how he'll get back to Indiana...

Last week on a short vacation break in Wisconsin I rode more miles in 2 days than Eric has apparently traveled in 2 months (and I'm not all that great shakes as a rider). Granted, he's got physical constraints, organizational problems, gear issues, and some weirdly original ideas about how to true a taco. But when I was tiring during those rides and thinking of quitting, I'd suddenly think of some of the truly amazing people he's "inspired" and find more energy, for them.

I don't want it to be a scam or a fool's journey, but with Rhite and CHite adding new fascinating detail, it seems it might be. I just wish he'd end up scamming himself into actually having to bike 500 miles (or 5, more likely).

I know where my own food choices got me, and I know what changing my food choices has done for me. These people's scam does not reflect on anybody here IMHO because nobody here has ever asked for a handout to accomplish their goals in life. Nobody here that I have seen has ever thought that reducing their diameter was the key to life issues unrelated to that. Just my .02 but I make fun of ME when I joke about calorie intake. That issue still exists within me but I control it on a daily basis and have far more good days than bad just like every other successful person here does.

I don't see anybody doing that. I see people bashing a guy that just happens to be using the bike as part of his ruse.

Every time some new "YOU WON'T BELIEVE WHAT THIS FAT PERSON IS DOING TO TAKE THEIR LIFE BACK" post makes the rounds every moron and their half-brother falls for it hook, line, and sinker and it's getting exhausting. Half the time these "success" stories are just that - stories. The other half they're outright frauds.

People like to talk a lot about change when they start getting media attention and the associated money that goes with it. For some strange reason they don't like to be held accountable. Funny how that works.

I hope nobody thought my last post about the Loch Ness Monster showing up was a poke at Eric's size, but I can see where it could have been taken that way.

It's actually 1) stolen from a South Park episode, and 2) intended to highlight how utterly convoluted this saga has become.

So, sorry if anyone took offense at it and if someone PM's me to delete it I have no issues doing so.

I just want to see one picture of Eric on a bike. Actually riding a bike with his feet on the pedals. If I were doing what he is, that would be one of the first pictures I'd put up. I mean seriously - outside of this forum, the general populace would probably look at Eric and think him incapable of even riding a foot. A picture would disprove that. He hasn't done that. As far as I know he hasn't done any riding.

This soap opera has gotten ridiculous.

On a better note - GinnyRed, welcome to bikeforums! Stick around...THIS is your place for inspiration and support among great, like minded people.

I sent the shop an email yesterday basically describing how (and why) a growing contingent of the on-line cycling community that also happens to actually ride believes their may be some fraud involved. Gave them a link to this thread and mentioned that he's using the shop's name in his various posts about his trip. Haven't gotten a response so far.

Oh WTF. Someone at the shop, who Eric barely knows, has a personal issue and he is trying to what...not only make it public but leverage it for sympathy and use it as his next excuse to stay firmly planted on the ground?

Apparently, one of the shop owners'/employees' wife had an accident that resulted in a neck FX requiring surgery. Not super serious/paralysis type fx but fusion type surgery. Shop owner replied to a message a friend sent him.
