Pizza Port 70 - ToC Edition - Saturday May 14
It's been too long since we've done a Pizza Port ride. How about Saturday May 14th. As always, I'll be the anchor at the back of the pack....I mean, I volunteer to ride sweep!
Important note: If you didn't register with the base, you need to or they won't let you ride through. As a matter of fact, it may be too late for this particular ride. I don't know. I thought it said 14 days or some silliness. You'd be stuck riding on the 5 for several miles.
What: Pizza Port 70
When: Saturday, May 14
Time: Roll at 8:30am
C/A Pizza Port 70 - A bike ride in Anaheim, CA
Beachgrad05's Strava from a previous ride:
Pizza Port 70
We had a great time last time, so we must do this again. All are welcome. This is a no-drop fun ride starting at the ARTIC train station by Angels' Stadium and ending at Pizza Port in Carlsbad. After an early dinner, we'll saunter back to the Metrolink station in Oceanside for the 5:30pm train back to Anaheim. This train has a "Bike Car" which can accommodate quite a few bikes. Weekend fare is $10. Being that we get on at the first stop, we have a better chance of getting them all together on one car. The past two rides has been no problem. Departure from Oceanside is 5:30. Arrival into Anaheim ARTIC is 6:45 PM.
We'll meet in Lot A at the Transit Center. Let's try to park or meet up at the very North end of the lot, closest to Katella. Last time parking was free. There is trail access right at Lot A and Katella.
We'll be riding through Camp Pendleton. REGISTRATION AND VALID LEGAL ID IS REQUIRED! Otherwise, you'll have to ride on I-5 through the area.
Lunch: The Shwak in Dana Point
Dinner: Pizza Port - Carlsbad
Sunset: 7:42 PM

It's probably not too late, but register anyway.
I may not be able to make the 14th. It APPEARS open on the calendar right now but I'll be out all day tomorrow chasing tunavic up hills and two weekends in a row might be too much for the rear echelon.

I've gone thru base 2x since new rules. Neither time did they scan my ID. tho I heard they did scan others.
Yesterday I rode all over OC ...71 miles with 4100 feet.

OK, looks like I'm partially in- I can't wait for the train back because I need to be showered and presentable at 6pm, so I'll meet you guys at the train station, ride down to however far I can make it before I have to turn around and head back. I can probably terminate at my in-laws in Costa Mesa on the way back so that should let me get all the way down past Capo with everybody.
Looking forward to a flat ride!

I'm not sure I can make this yet, will check with the powers that be. I remember after the last ride, I think @Fstop made a suggestion to go thru Corona del Mar via Bayside Dr. instead of PCH. Here is the route with this modification for your consideration. I routed it down to Ocean via Marguerite just because it is pretty scenic along there. Bayside is much less traveled than PCH, there is a bike lane as far as Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club and sharrows once the bike lane ends.

You can get to Ocean sooner by going up Fernleaf, but that's a short gnarly hill that is an acquired taste. It could be optional.

I will not do Fernleaf as it is just too steep and I'm barely able to stay upright

I'm game. It's all part of the adventure. And as long as we have the ocean to our right, we'll get there! I really don't know the area as well as I'd like, so my role here is merely instigator extraordinaire. Routing options from those who know and ride the area are welcome.

If you get on PCH at Margerite it still puts you in the sharrow area of CDM but going tonOcean and lookout and up Poppy to PCH gets us past that and we have bike lane again

Understood. Last time I did it was before I had my Garmin. I'm guessing it's at least 10-11%.

Yeah, what @Beachgrad05 said. It would be hard to get lost in there. R on Bayside to the end. R on Marguerite to the end. L on Ocean to the end, it turns left and becomes Poppy. Turn R on PCH and you're good to go.

So is the point of the detour mostly to avoid the stupid sharrows situation in CDM? PCH looks rideable (if not particularly scenic) up till CDM. I just spent some time on google street view refreshing my memory.

Yes. PCH isn't a problem until past MacArthur. The point of Bayside is to avoid the congestion/traffic on PCH in CDM, and improve the scenery as well. This change adds just 1/2 mile and according to ridewithgps it is actually less climbing at 2200 instead of 2500 feet. I'm good with that after last weekend!

@Beachgrad05 - you need to vote in the poll at the top so it looks like we have more riders going than not!

Instigator @PhotoJoe any interest in an IE ride. For example.........Redlands - Yucaipa - Angelus Oaks - Oak Glen then back to Redlands. Maybe a lunch stop at Angelus Oaks?
Hey, if you say it's a good ride, I think we could get it put together. I'd like to keep the PP ride for this Saturday, but am open to more rides on other dates. Can you put together a Ride With GPS route?
Edit: Looking at the map, that's a 95 mile drive for me! How many fruit checks will I have to go through to get there?

Another ride I'd like to do is up to Crystal Lake or whatever it's called, starting at Encanto park. Maybe swing up GMR the back way on the way back if the legs are willing.
The IE has some awesome characteristics for a ride btw - the cafe up at Angelus is really good, and Hangar 24 is entirely downhill from Angelus.
