You can get to Ocean sooner by going up Fernleaf, but that's a short gnarly hill that is an acquired taste. It could be optional.
My team at The Unlikely Cyclist does the detour on Bayside to marguerite and then toward Ocean and along there to lookout and up to PCH on Poppy

I will not do Fernleaf as it is just too steep and I'm barely able to stay upright
