I'm totally new to this forum, but I wanted to say "hi" to all the other fluffy girls on wheels. I'm just looking into getting back into riding. I have a Specialized Hardrock, but I'm (gulp) 100lbs heavier than I was when I first started riding it. I think it would be pretty rough on me to ride it now, so I'm thinking about getting a Trek Pure to just get back into the habit of riding around town/the beach. What do you guys think?

Welcome! Why don't you just air up the tires on the Hard Rock and ride that? Hard Rocks seem to be the old Clyde standby since they're pretty burly. Of course, if shopping therapy will motivate you to get back on the bike, go ahead and pick up that Trek.

i agree with jyossarian the specialized is one of the most recommended bikes on here so there won't be anything wrong with using it again. i'd suggest bringing it into a shop and getting them to give it a once over before you hop on it again and well done for even thinking bout going out on the bike again!!

I thought about jumping on the Hardrock again, but I'm not sure it's going to be all that comfortable right now (I'm about 320). I thought a crank forward would be a better bet to get back into shape. In addition, I live about a half block from the beach path, and I thought a comfort bike would make more sense around here. Now... I dunno. Maybe I should just put slicks on The Beast.

Oh it'll be a literal pain in the ass, don't be under any illusions about that. That's cuz you'll be getting back on the bike and your sit bones have to get used to riding again. Riding 4-5x a week will make the initial soreness go away in a week or two. Just take it slow and easy and don't push yourself too hard. You can get your old bike's positioning adjusted to be more upright like a cruiser if that's what you're looking for. I'd leave the knobbies on for some fun sand riding, but that's just me.

So, I tried out the electra townie... and it made me go "whee!" like I used to when I was a kid. Knowing my Hardrock will "be a literal pain in the ass" doesn't make me want to ride it. In fact, it seems like it would be setting myself up for failure. I'm pretty sure I'll be picking up a new toy in the next day or two. The Townie 7D was great, but I needed more gears for even casual rides (I have oddly strong legs). Now I'm decided between the Euro (fixed fork but more cash) and the 21.

Hello,

I'm Sam from Melbourne, Australia. I am new to the forum, so pleased to find a site with Athena's like me! Here are my stats:

Age: 38
Height: 165 cm (about 5'6")
Weight: about 280 pounds
Marital Status: Married (14 years, 2 kids - DS 10yo, DD 7yo)

I used to commute to work in the city, but found riding on the road next to huge trucks not a particularly healthy choice. I am just getting back into cycling. My son recently began track cycling, and loves it. This inspired my husband, who went out and bought a road bike, to train our son. On the weekend, I went with them on my trusty old Shogun Metro SE Hybrid (which is about 15 years old) and felt great. We rode 22 km and it was fun! So today I went and bought an 09 Cannondale 6 Fem 3. I am just hoping that I don't break it because I am too fat! I am hanging out for a ride now.... going tomorrow, will probably do about 30km (about 20ish miles). Can't wait!

CF is a good choice, and they can be high performance using mustache bars. I can't ride a regular upright, hurts too damn much...

First ride on my new bike

Well, I went for a ride on my new bike today..... and it didn't break! YAY! It was so comfortable to ride! In the end we only did 16km (about 10 miles) because it was getting late and dark, but I felt like I could have done another 10 miles! Just my hands hurt a little - still have some fine-tuning to do on positioning to get that right. Here is a pic of the bike, sorry about the poor quality, taken on my iphone with just the overhead light on, so not a great pic. Will get one tomorrow in the sunlight.

Here's a pic of the new bike. Her name is Wasabi Whee Girl because she rides like the bike I loved when I was a kid. This is one sweet, comfortable bike. I'll let you know how she feels when she has a couple hundred miles on her tires, but for now she's a blast.

New here and this is my first post. Just trying to get some information on my bike for accessories and help with getting back into riding. Ive bought a bike that rides like a dream (for someone who hasnt ridden since she was in her mid-teens) and hoping to use to commute to work with. Im an American ex-pat (Originally from Long Island, NY) currently living in the north of England.

Name:
Alternageek
Age: 33
Marital Status: Common Law Relationship
Height/weight: 5 '7 and over 230
What bike do you currently ride: 2010 Trek Navigator 3.0 WSD. (Should I mention my partner is VERY jealous of my bike? He wants a 'boys' version of my bike.. haha)
How long have you been riding?: Only started riding a bike again in the last two weeks. The last time I rode one was probably right before I earned my drivers license at 17. Before driving would bicycle everywhere. It was easier then as I lived in a VERY flat area and now live in a city built on 7 hills. Thats the hardest bit for me now.
Are you currently trying to lose weight, and how are you going about it?: Yes and at the moment, nothing. Im hoping I can get comfortable enough on my bike to commute to and from work to help start my weight loss. My problem is take aways and chocolate.
What is your ultimate goal?: Weight wise, to get between 180 to 160. Which at the max is about 70 or so pounds. Its achievable.
How often do you ride and for how long?: As Ive only had the bike for 2 weeks (and one we were away in Spain) its just for errands. Today rode to the Drs and then off to B&Q (Home Depot). Im hoping tomorrow to get to the supermarket for a few errands
What is your favorite thing about riding?: Unlike with walking being able to get somewhere in a decent amount of time. The freedom of just getting out and going. Almost as good as driving except more sweaty and less trunk space.

Thanks.

Hi everyone! o/ I just joined a few days ago, so I should probably post an intro thingie. Ok, here goes!

Name:
Pink Lemonade (Kim)
Age: 44
Marital Status: Single
Height/weight: 5'8"/appx 360, depending on meds
What bike do you currently ride: I don't currently have one. I joined up to research and find what I should be looking for in a bike and am strongly considering either a Trek Navigator or a Trek Skye.
How long have you been riding?: I used to ride every day when I was a kid, until my 10 speed got stolen in the early 80's. After 30-ish years, I'm looking to get back to riding.
Are you currently trying to lose weight, and how are you going about it?: Not really, though my doctor keeps throwing the surgery option at me.
What is your ultimate goal?: To get into better shape, whether I actually lose weight or not.
How often do you ride and for how long?: Again, I don't have a bike right now, but I plan on building up to riding every day once I get a bike.
What is your favorite thing about riding?: When I was a kid, riding my bike was one way I could get away from everything and be on my own. I loved the feel of the wind in my hair while speeding down hills at a breakneck pace. I'm amazed I never got into a wreck while riding. lol
