They must feed you pretty good out on the boat then! Fish, low carb (Won't work well for you as far as low carb goes with the long day's you'll be putting in, especially if you are a deck hand). Pulling pots is hard , nasty, and dangerous work! High protein and lots of hydration, keep the calories below tour output by about 500 cals or so.

Sugar + Caffeine and short sleep screws up the metabolism and slows/stops weight loss, so ya know!

Always wanted to Crab for a season, but I fear at 47 and all that, the deck might be a tad too much for me now!

I would think it's going to be really tough to eat 'good' while on the boat. From what I've seen on TV, most of the meals are designed to be cheap and filling, to fuel guys that are working throwing pots around for ten hours a day. While you're on the boat, and since you're not getting the same level of activity, it's going to mostly be about portion control for you. Try to eat more fruits and veg than anything else, and definitley limit your simple carbs (bread, rice, etc).

Once you're back on land and buying food for yourself, try to pick things that are minimally processed, and cut out as much sugar and high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) as possible. Instead of a TV chicken dinner, buy frozen chicken breasts and pan-fry them with a little canola or olive oil and some lo-fat dressing. The trick for me is to use a lot of seasoning (not too much salt) to take the place of fat and other crap that the body craves.

There are lots of threads on this in the Nutrition section. Check them out when you get a chance.

Tom, could you elaborate. I get about 5-6 hours of sleep per night, coupled with 20-32oz of coffee per day(no sugar). Perhaps this could be part of my struggles.

One thing that I love and is something I just threw together one day is the following:

1 large can of chopped tomatoe's think it 20 oz (low sodium if you can find it)
2 cans of Ro*Tel Original
1 large yellow or red onion, chopped medium size
2 cans black beans
1 small can of white corn
6 oz of chopped turkey breast
2 table spoons of cumin
1 table spoon of chopped garlic
1/2 teaspoon of red pepper flakes

Rinse the black beans with water getting all the dark goo they come in off them. If you can get them, look for Goya and then mix everything else in a large pot and bring to a boil and then let simmer for about 15 minutes. Stir ever so often. It's really tasty. It hardy and low fat and will give you protein and carbs with the beans. From start to finish it takes about 25 minutes. In fact I had this for lunch today and make enough of it to have it all week. I'm the only one who will eat it in my house because of the rotel tomatoes. I like spicy stuff

I have multiple variations of this. Try Muir Glen Organic Fire Roasted tomatoes instead of Rotel. You can use various kinds of turkey or veggie chili from cans as a replacement for several items in that list. There are many different brands, find one that suits you. Often, I combine the Rotel or Roasted Tomatoes in with chili, heat it up and dump it over raw spinach. It's tasty, filling and only around 500-600 calories.

Something you might want to think of, if you're not going to have much time to eat and/or much desire to care about what you eat, is a pre-packaged food system, like Nutrisystem (they have a new line of "man-food" that is supposed to be good). I've never used one, but I've heard good things, and it minimizes the prep time. Sure, it's not going to be gourmet, but it keeps at room temperature and you can buy several months worth at a time and not have to worry about it. Easy to keep yourself on track in terms of calories and nutrients, plus I hear they include snacks and desserts.

Just a thought.

Fish is good.Salmon is among the best.the simplest recipes can be found on the net by simply clickin' a few key words. For example click on THe Worlds Heathiest Foods. If you hate fish, go with the chicken, lean beef is fine too. NO pork, for one thing, the human digestive system has an adverse reaction to it.ALL peopler do,weather they know it or NOT. Many reasons and effects. To put it simple, we don't metabolize well. I'm NOT Kosher EITHER. I read some fine ideas in this thread. With all due respect to one or a few..STEP AWAY FROM the canned beans..ANYTHING in a can has more sodium in EACH can than anverage person good stand to sprinkle on thier food in a week.
Beans are great..a dollar or two a bag..they've directions, follow them but cook 'em WAY more than suggested.
Make Weight Watchers soup recipe. Don't use the cabbage, it's just too hard on the system, NOT my oppion either!! FACT.. it SO bloats the digestive tract , it impares the respiratory system, while you're digesting it.Don't bother with it. Maybe I'm speakin' out of term. I DID go from 368lbs to 228 in three years, lost ten excersizing after two weeks, still losin'..HAH what do I know ?

They'll feed you what they will on the boat. You won't need to worry about bonking. They'll be workin' ya ta death! You won't be ABLE to get enough calories

A co-worker and her husband used this and anyone doing any amount of excercize will suffer using this. Her husband is 6'5" and weighs in at 280 and they wanted him on a 1600 calorie diet. He is fairly active, but like to lift weights. He told me that he felt like like he never ate and always felt weak. Needless to say, he dumpped it and she is no longer using it.

It's also expensive and high in sodium.

Hi Jeff,

That's a tough one. When I started my transformation, I was taking in about 4000 calories a day of junk. I cut back the calories to 2000 and replaced the junk with healthier alternatives. Oatmeal and fruit replaced the bagel and sausage sandwiches with hash browns for breakfast, for instance. I still ate stuff that turns my stomach now - turkey hot dogs, for instance - but I gradually replaced them with better foods.

I discuss this a bit in the post below:

I lost 78 LBS 3 years ago and its pretty much stayed off with minimal attention.

I did the reduced carb thing. I was probably eating 2500-2800 calories a day while I was losing. Eating healthier Is the key. Boycot suger!!

I cut out processed foods totaly, cut out white flour anything, no potatoes (sweet Potatoes are a great food) I limit white rice and I avoid most other grains unless they have 3 grams or more of fiber.

I eat plenty of good protien. (you can eat lots of SNOW CRAB!!), green leafy veggies, limit startchy veggies(no peas ,corn ), and although healthy keep beans and other Legumes to a minimum unless your planning on a real heavy workout such as working on the fishing boat.

basically its keeping the suger levels down that keeps wt off (to lose wt though you have to have a calorie deficit but it can be a small one) the only mechanism that puts weight On ones Body quickly is High levels of insulin in your bloodstream due to high levels of glucose(Glucose that doesnt get burned off , goes right into fat stores.)

Protiens and low glycemic index foods will also get an insulin responce but a very low one compared to eating a white baked potatoe or a bowl of white rice ....

HMM funny I remember all The experts that told me to eat ramen noodles, potatoes (dont put butter on them and youll be fine) Italian bread is ok (no Butter) no nuts, only chicken or white fish (they said salmon has too much fat, all that fat will make you gain weight)...

anyway I stopped listening to the EXPERTS and I finally found somthing that works its been 3 years I dropped 5 pant sizes and its still off .

again I dont count calories, but have not gone back to eating ramen noodles, white bread, potatoes, White rice, or anything starchy, No junk food IE bagels, candy, chips doughnuts ... Ill have dessert on special occasions but thats it (fresh fruit with whip cream Ill do at any time as I will plain yogurt with Good stuff mixed in).

out on the boat youll be burnin lots of calories, Nuts would work well between meals

jerkey is another snack that works well for me.

<suppresses urge to blab about how much I love watching Deadliest Catch and would want to go crabbing if it wouldn't be a guaranteed ditching from my fiance>

but seriously, I'm not sure about the nutritional data on Red Bull, but switching to Rock Star (which has a huge dose of B complex vitamins and other stuff) or just taking a B complex pill might help some with the metabolic/energy problems. also, since both are 1.99US per can and you get double the Rock Star, it works out a little cheaper and is available in flavors with less sugar or even some fruitjuice.

One thing I can say is that you've got to carefully weight the difference between what you eat and what the crew eats, and that's the hardest thing. My brother has issues that require him to pretty much shovel as many calories in as possible just to maintain a healthy body weight, where as my mom and I don't have nearly that kind of requirement, which led both of us to gaining/maintining a high weight. Disciplining yourself to stop at smaller servings or different foods than the crew (especially if you all eat as a group) is probably one of the hardest yet most important steps you can take.

Good luck and stay on the crab!

I'd be interested to know if changing your crew's diet might have a positive effect on production. Even just a slight change. Maybe perform a little experiment on them; more proteins and super foods like sweet potatoes.

protein shakes with some fruit component

I usually try to eat oatmeal once a day too, upping your fiber intake helps a lot

4-5 egg omlettes with most of the yolks removed
