How long do your bike shorts last?
I own 2 pairs of bike shorts. Both from www.aerotechdesigns.com. I know they were excellent quality bike shorts...seemed way thicker and more comfy than the stuff I saw in many bike shops and especially from Performance/Nashbar (that a friend of mine had).
I've had them probably 2 1/2 years or so and just noticed last night that inner legs are wearing thin. they haven't broken through to a hole yet, but it won't be much longer I suspect.
Does 2 1/2 years seem too short, or should I not be wearing them the rest of the day after biking just because they are so comfortable.
Thoughts?

They're about right for the time. I'd still change them out after riding though to let the "boys" air and reduce bacterial growth and saddle itch.

Ironically I only have 1 pair of aerotech shorts! They are the high-end super hot lycra ones, and I *love* them, I too have seen other shorts and don't think the quality is anywhere close. I was at a LBS today, in fact, and most of them there seemed thin and flimsy compared to my aerotech shorts.
Mine probably have 1500 miles under them, and for the past several weeks I've been wearing them daily, washing every two days. That sounds gross, but I take them off as soon as I get to work/home to keep the bacteria at bay. I'd suggest you do this as well, just because.. yeah
. They most definitely are VERY comfy!
I think I'm going to order another pair as mine are getting a bit large for me, so I can go with a size down and wear those for another year. Like you, this time around I'll likely grab some of the "touring" shorts as I find that 90% of the time I'm wearing shorts over my cycling ones, and I'll probably see if I can get a year out of those as well .

I have a pair of Aerotech shorts from back before they were Aerotech. (Used to be Schnaubelt Shorts) Egads these things are old, and I only wear them underneath cargo shorts when I'm running errands, but they're not *totally* worn out yet, and I'm cheap like that.
My Performance Century Gel bibs are only about 6 months old, and I'm pretty sure that I'll get 2 or 2.5 years out of them before I completely wear down the gel pad in them. I doubt it's going to be the lycra that gives out on them first, though.

I wore my new Aerotech bibs today for the first time for the morning commute. Very comfortable and decent quality. For $65 if they last two years for me I will feel I've received my money's worth.
In fact, it's about time to put them on again and head home...

Hahahaha! Whoever said cycling in the humid midwest was a pleasant thing? It generally involves three showers a day, and about 300oz of water intake. Fun times!

im getting in on this late, but i have a shorts question too. i have been wearing compression shorts,because i have a lot of them from my football days.
but today i received a pair of cycling shorts that i ordered from ebay and,yes they are very comfortablew. but are they really advantageous over athletic wear of some type.
i see some things that you can wear under your clothes that has a chamois,so that your clothing then becomes cycling clothing. im thinking of trying those.because i have tons of shorts and,sweatpants that i can wear over them.

I don't want to admit how long I've been riding my old ultrasensors. Finally retired them a few months ago.
I've been riding voler's Avanti short. Picked them up for $40/pair which seems far more reasonable than dropping $90 for a pair of PIs. I like the Avantis a lot except, now that I've lost weight, they're a little big. I wouldn't hesitate to order from velowear.com again, maybe get a pair of their higher-end short. Seems like these will last a couple years.

Just be careful with Fabreeze if you have pets - it's not good for them. Better to spray outside and keep away from where they can sniff it.

I have probably had a pair of Performance Elite shorts for five years, they still are ok. But after about three years, they are functional but the material gets a little thinner. Older shorts might look at yourself in the mirror( a rear shot.) to be sure the thinner material does not expose anything. Hate that. I wonder if more expensive shorts like my PI's last longer. Hope so. They get pretty expensive.
