A Question...

Well I did my first commute this morning, it was a bracing 38 degrees but nice out otherwise.

My question is about spokes. I noticed a little wobble in the back tire this morning, and when I got in I checked and have a couple of spokes on the non-drive side of the rear wheel that are loose. I can turn the nipple by hand. My question is how do I tell a broken spoke from a loose one? I gave each one a little tugg and they do not seem to want to come loose so I would assume that they are just loose. Either way I'm going to take it to the LBS this afternoon to get it fixed (free tune-ups with the purchase of the bike and its only 2 weeks old.)

Thanks in advance for the advice.

The spokes might have broken inside the hub. Get it checked.

Bike? Weight? Wheels?

Sounds like the wheel was built with the wrong tension and it's coming undone. Definitely hit up your LBS.

I took it over and had it worked on last night, just loose apparently. Luckily they were able to get it finished last night so I'm back on the road this morning. I honestly feel much more awake in the mornings now since I am commuting by bike.

As far as bike, I'm on a 2008 Hardrock pro with stock wheels. I figure I will have to replace them at some point but i was hoping to get more then 20 miles out of them. As far as weight, I'm currently 432 as of this morning, down from 440 in mid January.

Carry a spoke wrench. Flick the spokes with your finger and listen to the pitch. Tighten loose spokes to the same approximate pitch. Drive side has a higher pitch.
