I'm Baaaaaack....

Roller of Dave here.

Haven't really been around, sorry about that.

I never gave up, but I did redirect my focus for a time, it was entirely necessary and has been a great success!

When I was here before, I don't think I was really truly ready, my stamina and core strength just wasn't up to it, and my expectations weren't really all that realistic, but my determination was and is unstoppable.

Since I have been here, we have had to give up our house, and there were a lot of personal dramatics that took a lot of my time away from riding my bike, but I continued working on my eating, in fact I switched from low carb to low fat/calorie; healthy carb/fat and lost over a hundred pounds!

I've lost 67 of them since the first of the year alone. I've seriously stepped up my activity level, walking working with weights, and climbing stairs. Lots of stairs!

I moved to a town home with four levels, and put my PC as far from my bathroom as humanly possible, and I drink a LOT of water so I have no choice but to work out if I like my chair dry.

At first all the stairs knocked the stuffing out of my on a fairly constant basis, but it made me stronger until they don't seem so bad anymore.

Now I can walk just about anywhere i go, my mobility scooter has gotten buried under stuff in the garage because I just never use it any more. I used two canes for a bit, then just one cane, and now I don't need even THAT very often.

But eagle hasn't gotten much use. I just find such a large piece of machinery to be very inconvenient, I can walk much more in the time it would take me to get Eagle out of the garage, so mostly I ahve just been strolling all over the place.

But today.... I got a bug up the old chimney and decided that I have gotten so much better, maybe i can ride an upright bike....

So i got out Becky's old Nishiki, adjusted the tire pressure a bit, harder than she usually likes, but not max. swung my leg over, AND RODE!

I was a bit shaky for a bit, but it all came back to me, the joy, the wonder, in a way riding Eagle never really felt like.

I guess one of the reasons I let myself kinda drift away from this forum was that you all rode upright bikes, and all talked about saddles, wheels and stuff that applied and I felt like a bit of an oddball with my very different piece of machinery, and I am very sorry for that. I sure hope Clydes are forgiving by nature...

But now I look forward to getting back up to speed, and am glad you are all still here.

So, from an estimated 500lbs down to the first verified weight 489 down to 455 on the first and 388 today.

I am back.

The poet returns! Finally!

RollerDave, I'm glad you are back. And I'm sorry you felt you were an oddball and shouldn't participate. Many, if not most, of the posters here ARE oddballs. We have a PhD-bound formerly fat truck driver, novice triathletes, folks who ride centuries shortly after learning to ride, people who commute when they could drive, seven footers, the Nebraska Chubby Super-biker, more than a few bent and trike riders, an Athena hottie, and a fellow who tours with his head on crooked. But that's the joy of the forum. And why you belong here. You fit in!

BTW, we have a LOT of 500 pound folks here lately. TakingControl is the latest and most prominent one. Start sharing notes with him, them, and us!

Your friend,
Neil, AKA The Historian

Congratulations on the weight loss, and getting back to biking. Keep it up. Sounds like you have a lot of determination, that will take as far as you want it to.

Magnificent! The first thing that most people notice after my first 60 pounds of weight loss is in my face, I even shaved off my beard (for the summer) because I was no longer embarrassed to show off my chubby cheeks.

Sorry, no offense intended. I wanted to emphasize to Rollerdave that "he is not alone." And anyone else out there that might be in the uber-Clyde or Athena category. I don't want anyone staying away because they don't think they fit in.

Dave,

Glad your back, none of us fit in, that's why we all belong.

Hey now I'm curious, what is Eagle? I just went recumbent myself and it's a game changer in how much I can ride due to my back, now if I can keep from injuring myself I might just get healthy.

I'm sorry, I guess I got so excited I forgot that I ought to put things in proper context!

Then when i went to find the old threads, it turns out I used to have an "m" at the end or something.

I do use the name with an m when I can't use it plain as M is my last initial and i am in Minnesota, but I can see how it would have been hard to put that together.

Here are links to the original threads:

Who is this roller dave?

rollerdave's trike saga

The Eagle has landed!

Eagle detail pics

Eagle maiden flight

Second Ride

Then I got embroiled in a custody case involving my niece, then a lawsuit with a former tenant who trashed my house, then falling under budget and having to move out of the house, then trying to get rid of the house, now trying to clear the house out before our short sale deal closes...

But all along eating right, and walking, lifting weights, and following along with my Biggest Loser workout DVD's and exercise book...

I fear I have completely bypassed the necessity for Eagle, and will probably sell her.

Looking back, my hopes 'n dreams/plans 'n schemes were pretty complicated, and way over rationalized.

Much simpler this way, and you can hang three bikes on the wall where just Eagle fits right now.

But I'll do my bike shopping in another thread.

Hey, RD, it's great to see you back! From the other threads, I see you're still riding. That's great! And you're lighter than I am now; I'm just recently recovered from knee surgery and getting back at it again.
I missed your posts, and like one of the others said, "poet" is a pretty good description. You've got a knack for writing, so ride a lot and keep the entertaining reports coming!

Well thank you!

Yeah, I never seriously doubted I would be welcome back, and I never really felt unwelcome, it's just that there weren't many recumbent clydes at the time, and I was having a hard time identifying with all the upright talk, the brooks saddles, all that.

And then stuff got overwhelming, but now I'm back and all the stuff that used to be Greek to me is the reason I'm here. I think it will stick this time.

Thank you!

I enjoy writing, and if anyone enjoys reading it that's just icing on the cake for me.

I hope your knee comes back strong as ever, and will do my best to keep spouting off in my inimitable fashion so lang as anyone says they want to read it.

Thanks, Steve.

Yeah, I had an overly complex plan before, it relied on special compensation for this, adaptive help for that, it was a lot of rationalizations. But just because "rationalizations" contains the word "rational" doesn't mean it IS.

Now I'm just working on staying out of my own way, and getting on with it.

It's been pretty good so far, so now for the next phase, thus here I am.

Congratulations on the amount of weight you have lost RollerDave, but you also seem to have lost an "M" from your “user name” as well, how did that happen?…
