Is losing weight making you cranky?

I've seen several articles that suggests low serotonin levels can have a negative effect on mood. Other articles suggest that high carb diets aid in the production of serotonin.

This article brings both together.

Hmm, an Internet article that doesn't site any sources. Better follow their advice.

No, it isn't. I like seeing that number go down.

Am I cranky when I'm hungry? You betcha.

Life is making me cranky.
Snow is making me cranky.

But solid article otherwise. I bought that "Serotonin Power Diet" book, wasn't real impressed. Kinda underfeeds anyone who does a decent amount of exercise, yet I'm not sure how to tweak it. But it does say to keep the snacks high carb and both low fat and low protein. It suggests stuff like rice cakes and low-fat graham crackers as snacks.

Loosing weight = cranky; no not in my case.
But low blood sugar level or dehydrated makes me very cranky.

Note the use of the word suggest. I am not claiming this is factual. Are we cranky this morning?

jethro56, It's been my experiance that substancially altering body habits can cause crankiness for a short period. The worst for me was probably switching to caffine free coffee followed by no salt (I fudge a little when I get french fries).

I ran across this theory while trying to understand why I have a craving for food on rest days when I don't exercise. Others have stated that exercise kills hunger and I agree. If I can tell myself "It's natural to be hungry on rest days." It somehow helps me to endure the craving and not give in to it.

On a surface perusal, the theory seems to focus on effects rather than causes.

Bouts of crankiness (as opposed to longer term issues) are likely the result of a variety of issues. Job stress, money stress, hunger, dehydration, being specific examples.

It is perfectly possible to lose weight and never experience hunger (at least hunger that isn't immediately satisfied). Also, loosing weight does not equate to consuming insufficient carbs... Personally my intake of carbs is higher now than before my lifestyle changes.

I'm cranky when I gain weight, have a bad day, am injured and can't ride, or when I'm kept out in the cold because Sayre can't hear his doorbell when he's playing Guitar Hero. I'm not cranky from weight loss.

Could it be that you are bored and turn to food because that's what you used to do?

^ Ditto this and I'm also cranky when I can't exercise - regularly getting the heart rate up vastly improves my mood.

I'm always cranky. I'm striving to reach the level of crotchety at some point, and god willing, eventually cantankerous. I would also be quite content to add the suffix of old kook to that last title.

Weight loss = crankiness? I think we need to separate cause and effect here, at least in the left part of the equation. Losing weight, per se, has only positive effects on my psyche. It's what causes the weight loss that can occasionally deflate my mood.

I find that it has had quite the opposite effect on me, I am always in a good mood since dropping the weight but then again at 500 pounds I suppose anyone's disposition would have to improve after losing more than 200 pounds

I do get cranky when I have gone too long without eating something, I rarely wait more than 3 and a half hours between meals/snacks and if it goes much longer than 4 to 4 and a half I do in fact get grumpy. My wife can most times see it coming sooner than I do and will recommend that we either stop in somewhere to grab a small snack if we're out or will pull a pear from her purse and offer it up, I know why the pear made the appearance usually and correct my attitude accordingly.

I don't know about serotonin supplements or looking for a way to up levels to control appetite like the article suggests but to control hunger I drink green tea throughout every day and know that it helps with appetite control. I almost exclusively drink straight H2O or and green tea these days and have for about 2 years now, I do toss in a zero calorie Powerade from time to time but the norm is green tea and H2O, try it! it does work

As Ever

This frigid 40 degree weather is making me cranky. Tough to get the miles in.
