What is your "Clyde Ryde"

A million apologies if I have missed a previous thread in which we post pictures of our bikes. I love looking at what other people ride, so I thought it would be fun to start such a thread. What I think will be cool about this is that you can post whatever you ride, so no worries if it is super expensive or department store cheap. The road cycling forum has plenty of "hey look at how expense my bike is" threads. This should be fun, particularly since all of us are on the heavy side and our bikes may reflect that in how they are set up. Athenas, post your rides too! I just couldn't think of a clever rhyme for "athena." Suggestions are welcome.

Here are a couple of mine. I need to take a good picture of my chopper/cruiser and my "mountain bike" is currently in pieces with the frame on its way to California for the manufacturer to look at it due to misalignment issues. Anyway...without further adieu:

2009 KHS Flite 220 - Upgraded the rear derailleur to Tiagra and got ride of the mountain bike cassette that came on it, switching to a SRAM 12-26 which is perfect with the compact crank. I love big tires, so I put those Panaracer 700x32c Urban Max tires which are still pretty lightweight, but tough as nails and handle dirt very well. Today, I bought some Specialzed Bar Phat and installed it. This is really nice stuff. I also changed the seatpost, robbed the Brooks B17 from my mountain bike, flipped the stem, and peeled the tacky decals off the rims.

Before:

After:

New handlebar tape:

Gratuitous glamor shot:

Another bike I really enjoy riding a lot is my 2011 Novara Buzz One single speed townie. Other than swapping tires, pedals, and grips, this one is stock except for the gearing. I changed the freewheel to 18 teeth (was 16 with a 42 tooth crank) for a bit easier acceleration and hill climbing. The cheapo pedals I put on there don't have much grip, so I am waiting for some grippier Azonic freestyle type pedals that are white which should look cool:

Alright - here's mine... oldie but goodie. Vintage 80s Merlin Road frame with some SRAM upgrades last year. Unfortunately, the crank is still some square taper Mavic for BB reasons. Ti is a little noodly when you stomp on it, but I like it anyway. The wheels have way too few spokes for a lard butt like mine, but somehow the wheels remain true.

Mines a Lynskey with SRAM Rival. I use it for all my riding, with longer rides including centuries, double metrics and (occasionally) a double century. I went with the medium cage RD so I could fit the 11/32 cassette - I'm not a great climber, so I need every gear I can get sometimes! Current tires are Michelin Pro Optimum 25c, which I'm happy with so far (although they are not cheap), the wheels are handbuilt using DT Swiss hubs, RR1.1 rims and 28/32 spokes f/r. Slightly oversized tubing makes sure this Ti bike is not whippy at all.

Ready for the Solvang Spring Double last year.

On the Death Valley Fall Double (you'd think a professional photographer could take a non-blurry photo!)

What it looks like without all the extra stuff I carry for long rides

It's a nice bike - I've had very few problems with it over the last 3 years. Just yesterday, we did a 110 mile ride with 10,500 feet of climbing - the first 80 miles were over the route for stage 4 from the upcoming Tour of California, the last 30 were to get us back to where we started.

My two "steeds":

1. Spec. Roubaix Comp - my "main" bike that has carried me many, many miles...

2. Trek Fx 7.3 for rainy days or winter commutes.

I built this Soma Doublecross from a bare frame and fork back in 2005. I installed the headset, bottom bracket, derailleurs, shifters, cabling, everything. It has Nitto Noodle bars wrapped with cloth tape which has had quite a few coats of shellac. The Brooks B17 is nicely broken in. I specced and built the wheels: Shimano XT 36 hole hubs, DT double-butted spokes, Mavic T519 touring rims. These are tough wheels. I am running Panaracer Pasela TourGuard 700x35c tires for a cushy ride.

Lots of hills in my riding territory, and I am heavy and weak and old, so I have the Sugino XD600 triple with 46/36/24T chainrings and an XT 11/34 9 speed cogset in the rear. on the 24F/34R it's hard to keep up enough speed to keep from falling over. ;-)

Note that this is one of the original Doublecross frames made with Reynolds 631 butted tubing.

I have spent many many happy hours on this bike. Sometimes it has a Tubus rear rack and fenders, but not this time of year. That's a Carradice Barley bag on a Carradice SQR quick release bracket.

Nice to see them Brooks saddles. Perhaps tomorrow I'll be able to share my pic. I will be picking up my bike tomorrow. Just don't know which one yet.

flippin_bikes: I assume you went from an 11-32 to the 12-26 I did as well and it was a good decision. Did you shorten the chain? I haven't yet but it seems that I get a little more clunking with the Alivio deraileur now. I adjusted the idlers up closer though. I don't think I'll go back to the 11-32.

I roll on the Mclydesdale of course!!! (60cm china carbon blank)

Mclydesdale by adam_mac84, on Flickr

My Motobecane CX bike... yes, i am an internet buying *****, for some reason, most LBS turn me off when i shop for a bike
64cm. Probably could have gotten away with a 61 in hindsight... but it was my first bike, and i wasn't comfortable with the bar drop on a 61 at that time.

My everyday ride is a Colnago C-50. I run Ultegra 30sd on it. The aerobars come and go depending on what I'm doings as well as the gearing.

Here it is in randoneuring mode:

For some TT's and as a climbing bike for Ultra races I use my Specialized Allez Pro. It's currently got a 20sp compact on it in a combination of ultegra and DA parts.

My tandem is a custom Calfee. It's got a combo of DA, Ultegra and XTR parts and a 27spd drive train. I don't have any real pics of it sitting still...have to work on that. This is the drive end.

and the buisness end.

I actually had an 11-30 cassette on there which is an odd size, but I did take one link of chain out. It certainly won't hurt if you removed a link if you are sure you won't be going back to a larger cassette. You could still run an 11-28 if you wanted to if you find that the 26 tooth cog isn't quite cutting it. I could have taken another link out of my chain and been fine, but I figured I would leave it just in case I later opted for 11-28 gearing. I don't think I will, though. The 12-26 is much more usable. It allows me to ride in the small ring and not be spinning out at 12-13 miles per hour in the middle cogs of the cassette. Before, I had to get down into the smaller cogs on the cassette for that speed range which caused the chain to rub the large chain ring due to the wacky chain line. It forced me to run the big ring up front and shift down to the larger cogs in the back which had the chain line equally screwy. Now I can hum along at 12-13 which is perfect for running into the wind or up a hill.

I certainly don't miss the 30 tooth cog on my bike. I have a compact double and the 34/26 gear combo should be plenty for the steeper hills where I live. I haven't even had to use the 26 yet, but I know I will on one of the routes I have yet to take since changing the cassette. My philosophy on gearing is that if you don't have it, you don't need it. Just push the gear you have. I will say that my single speed helps me live up to that mantra.

I'd like to get one for my Marin, but I have used every bit of real estate on my handlebars where my grips, brake levers, and shifters mount. I saw one recently that mounts under the stem in place of one of the headset spacers. I think I may pick up of those up next time I see one at a shop.

Flippin: I'm running a 48-38-28 front. I could get by just fine with a 38 only front. I really don't see going back to the 11-32. If anything I've considered going to an 11-23. It's not that I'm that strong a rider. It's just really flat here.Wind is a killer though.

It's really strange but I don't feel much of a difference from the triple to the double. IMO, just getting used to it!

Yep, it's worked well for years. I shim it with a plastic shim and am very careful not to over tighten it. I also go pretty light. The last 1200km ride I did the bike weighed less than 28lbs fully loaded.
