Yay Alphageek_gb!

I had a setback yesterday, and ended up in the ER.
I think what happened is that since I'd been sick with a sore throat the two previous days I hadn't drank as much as usual and so I'd started my ride under-hydrated. I looked up all the symptoms when I got home and they match exactly for dehydration.

Now I'm way behind on my miles but there's more than a week left in the month so hopefully I can get back on track.

hit 150

Hit 150 yesterday. I've had a busy month and didn't keep track of a few rides but four of us (me the only clyde) entered the Alaska Fireweed 400 in the 50-64 yr old class. And we won our class... 196 miles in 11 hr and 17 minutes. I did 70 miles (not all at one shot) with an overall average of 17.5 mph but the hardest uphill sections were given to our son-in-law who won the race for us .... pretty much single handedly. I should be on pace to do 300 miles this month. A year and a half ago I couldn't ride 5 miles....

Big Mont - that pretty much mirrors my experience. The big local shop that everyone knows didn't have any time for me. I went through 3 or 4 stores until I found one that did. The manager at this one spent over 2 hours with me helping me with fit and pedal choice. The big shop is 5 min away. This one is 45 min away. Well worth the drive. (for those in the area, I highly recommend Cycles Plus in Huntington, NY).

nutmeg, be real careful with that stuff. Dehydration is serious and can cause heart issues, big time. My real job is in the a/c biz, and we never go to a house that's cool. Most of our a/c's are in attics around here, which are even hotter. Our crews start hydrating before they ever leave the shop and most two man crews will go through 5 gallons of water in a day. I hope yours is nothing serious. We are coming into the hottest 4 weeks of summer right now, so everyone please be cautious.

Thanks, Big Mont. They were all worried about my heart, since I'm older and an Athena and all. I'm definitely going to be more aware of hydration now. I've ordered a camel-back hydration pack because in this heat I really need a lot more water.

Whoohoo! I Made it!

Being newly returned to riding (started in June) I wanted to participate in this challenge, but had no idea if I could do 100 miles.

So rather than set a goal that might be discouraging because it was too hard, I decided that I would try my best to do 75 miles this month.

I'm very pleased to announce that I met that goal this morning, and now have over 76 miles ridden this month!

So, I'm resetting my goal. I plan and intend to ride at least 100 miles this month.

And in perhaps related news, I'm now 12 pounds closer to exiting the ranks of the Clydesdales (though there are months to go ...)

One of the real issues with hydration is the fact that two water bottles are not enough for a ride of more than about two hours. The basic "rule" is a bottle an hour if you are working hard. I think the water in a back pack thing is a good idea but I can't bear to carry such a thing, but it's good that you're being more aware of the potentially critical problem. Recently my wife bonked in a serious way from lack of food and dehydration. It really scared me.

So glad you are ok!!!!! I am sitting out the heat with a bad neck and shoulder. I walked early this morning and even then it was almost too hot for me.

I didn't know of this thread when July started but I just passed the 100 mile mark yesterday.

https://runkeeper.com/user/msalgado/fitnessReports

With over a week left I'm going to try to hit the 150 mark for sure.

6 yesterday and 9 today, despite very hot and humid weather. The heat index was 110 this afternoon. I'm at 137 for the month, so my goal of 150 shouldn't be a problem. Not sure if I can hit 200, but there are two weekends left. Hmmm....

Hey thanks it's a good thing because the next ride, my first mountain bike ride of the year ended with me going off track and crashing pretty good.

Going to try and get back out on the road this weekend.

July 2: 3.6 hills
July 3: 8.5 hills
July 5: 11.5 on the flats
July 6: 8.3 flat!
July 6: evening ride, 3.1 miles
July 7: 11.4 in two separate rides. One in the heat uphill to the bike shop for a repair, one in the cool of the evening
July 8: 7.3
July 9: 8.1 54 degrees, foggy. Nice.
July 10: 15, half with spouse pretty slowly
July 12: 18.4. 11 moving along, the rest with spouse tooling along. Bad shoulder pain cut the ride short.
July 13: 4.75 Rode a craigslist cheap huffy to get air in tires and deliver to niece
July 15: 17.35 Took the prior day off, but the knot by my left shoulder blade is still bad. Looked up neck and shoulder strengthening exercises. I think that I tense up my neck/shoulders as it feels just like it did when I was a desk jockey all day long.
July 16: 2.9 in the cool evening.
July 17. 16.4 I tried to keep my shoulders loose and relaxed and was good for about 12 miles, then not. .
July 19. 6.35 Slowly with spouse. Pain too bad to continue.
July 21. 8.2. Rode to meet goal and then quit. Too painful. Now I am going to avoid the bike for a few days.

151.15 done. Goal met.

My new seat post and saddle rock, but best of all was my daughter wanting to roller blade along with me last night. That was fun and made the ride special. She got a kick out of how I say hi to all the folks sitting on their porches along the way.

the heat and humidity here in Va. is slowing me down this week. I only have 41 miles this week for a monthly total of 225 miles. I want 300 but we will see. You guys are doing great, keep up the good work!!

Wow.. A bunch of that could complete their goal by this weekend! Great job all! Me... I'm up to just over 180 for the month. I'm hoping for something between 200 and 250 total now. Not bad considering I wasn't convinced that I'd make 150. Really almost all my ride is commuting, but I vary the route greatly.

I really thought I'd have hit 150 by now but my Trek 930's bottom bracket finally went. I ordered a new one and while waiting for it I found a nice replacement that will make a better commuter than the Trek did. So today I bought a Raleigh Route 4.0 and I absolutely love it for city riding and commuting. I put an even 14 miles on it today and now my total is 136.1 miles for July. So I'll definitely break my goal of 150 for the month and even better I get to start converting my Trek 930 to a fixie and get it ready for winter when it becomes my daily rider again. Gonna be fun!
