I usually use a citrus based chain cleaner for that sort of thing - they aren't $15. Maybe $8.
Which bearings are you repacking? I'm sure there's a Phil Woods grease that's perfect for the job.

Go to lowes or home depot and buy marine bearing grease (its also called boat trailer grease). A small tube will cost you like 5-8 bucks and will last you a couple of overhauls.

Dang, it's more expensive than I remember... this is what I used when I took my bike apart. Soaked the chain and cassette in it and it came out super shiny & clean.

Get a gallon of mineral spirits at Home Depot for about $12, it cleans better then a degreaser and even though it's not politically correct when your done with the dirty solvent pour it on your weeds, it makes a great weed killer.
