As I said earlier, it's the 2-3% grades that kill me. I can tell a 4% one is going up

You are looking at the "one wrong turn" version, I was looking at this one https://www.strava.com/segments/634761. Looking at his ride I am most curious how he got his iphone to run strava for 9 hours without dying!

It looks like his phone went haywire for about an hour, so maybe it didn't.

maybe he just changed batteries mid-ride - you can do that on an iPhone, right?

35 miles at 5.3%. There are words for that but this is a family show...

With my paltry FTP I could do that ride in a week with the help of a truck that has a bike rack.

Glad I wasn't using the gradient display tonight.
Got toward the end of the first group ride I've done since the accident. At mile 21 of 26 came to a climb. Would have made me mad to see how slow I was going on only that slight of an incline at a tempo HR... 3.7 miles at an avg of 3.3% with the last 1.2 averaging 6.3%. 1 1/2 minutes behind the Strava leader.

C'mon if you do the downhill it averages out to 0%.

Besides, it's only 285 feet per mile, you can do that in your sleep! it's barely hilly at all!

Edit - and only 142 feet per mile for the whole ride! Barely noticeable for such a stalwart as yourself!

Well do ya punk? I like it! I have done a couple of climbs in my life but didn't have a Garmin. The times I struggled up a steep section I felt like I was just getting tired and contributed the feeling as defeating. Now I monitor the grade and if I feel tired I can justify it by the grade.

In other words, if I have been on a 6% grade for some time but start struggling a bit, if I see a 12% reading, I know I just have to get passed this section then it's back to feeling normal. Gives me hope that it will get better.
We had no hint you ever struggled until now!

Yeah I like it, I just don't use it enough cos I broke one mount and the other is on a stem I removed ...oik! I better do something about that; I've been riding with my Edge in my pocket for way too long!

Only thing about gradient is it varies greatly with the bike's attitude, handlebars, etc. and is slow to respond (laggy) so it seems a bit relative to me, I kind of average it out.

at 142'/mi it puts the ride into the 'Climby' category. As soon as you let me know when and where to meet you for that ride I'll be there. Please provide transportation.
What's the worst thing that can happen - we both resurrect the "I climbed my first hill" thread?

I'll provide transportation from La Haina to the foot of Haleakala. it's up to you to swim to Maui.

MoM averages out to 0% too you know.
