My first ride

Well some of you may remember a few weeks ago I tried to ride my new bike for the first time and got caught up trying to get on and threw my back out. Well might as well be honest I started feeling better and couldnt get myself to try again for 4 or 5 days. (yep 340 lb guy was scared of a something that children do every day in this country) Well I finally did it I got on my bike and started riding. I made a few mistakes along the way, missed a few gears and for the most part had to look like an idiot to anyone watching but I didnt care. I was having fun. Now my biggest mistake was I had planned out a route that ended at a greasy spoon for breakfast so I didnt eat anything before I left. Looking back I wouldnt have driven my car with out fuel I have no idea why I wouldnt make sure my body had fuel before leaving. Anyway I made it 4.6 miles on my first go... Not as far as I had hoped but I guess I have to start somewhere.

That's great start! Keep on riding, and NEVER be embarrassed. You on a bike while they are watching TV or in a air-conditioned car!

Never feel embarrassed. When I see someone who is big doing exercise I think ''more power to 'em''

I kind of wish we could get all of the skinny mini cyclists to wear weighted vests to about 210 lbs and let them understand where you're coming from.

Fantastic!

Excellent for a first ride, mine was .6 miles and I felt sore for a week afterwards!
Keep up the good work!

4.6 miles, fantastic! How's the ride? Flat, sloped, hilly? Road or bike trail?

My first ride other than tooling along barely moving with kids on a flat bike trail was last week and 3.5 miles nearly did me in. It's all up and down hills behind my house and I stopped on the first big hill 3/4 of the way up to walk the rest of it and dang near fell over. My legs just about gave out on me, they were like overcooked spaghetti noodles, LOL. Now on my 6th ride tonight I peddled 6 miles at about 12 mph on the ever so slightly incline on a flat and straight bike trail, about 15 mph for the 6 miles back along with sprinting the last 1/4 mile or so at 18 mph. Big difference from my coasting downhill behind my house at 30 mph and trucking up the next hill at 3 mph, LOL.

Great start. My first ride was all of 1.5 miles and I was sure my legs were going to burst into flames. Keep up the good work.

Good goin' DSMRob! You might consider keeping a log to keep track of your progress. It's a long road (so to speak), but staying committed to your goals and having fun will pay big dividends!

A log should include both your 'good days' and the 'not so good days'.

There should be more good days than other.

Hopefully every day will be better than the last.

If you did 4.6 on your first ride you are starting out in better shape than a lot of us. I did less than a mile and I am not a couch potato. I found out after a few rides that my legs got tired at nearly the same distance every time. What I figured out was that if I just took it easy after they got tired for a little ways and recovered I could go a lot further. I was soon riding several miles and now can do 20 nonstop on a hilly road in 95+heat. I also feel better and my b/p is down. This is after only riding a month and a half. I feel like that by the time cooler weather gets here I will be able to ride as far as I want. Maybe I'm dreaming but I am going to find out

My first ride was this summer after years of not being on a bike.

I hopped on and wobbled down the sidewalk. I walked across the street and wobbled to the park. I wobbled around the park a bit. Then it started to pour so I wobbled my way under a bridge to wait it out. I was more a wet noodle then a human body at that time, inside and out. I had to lean on the bike to stay upright. It was pathetic. I barely got going again after the rain ended. I weebled and wobbled home slowly.

I can walk for miles but the under three I rode killed me. I was sore for days.

Congratulations on your first ride! Your first ride of 4.6 miles was a lot longer than my first of 1.5 miles. The first trip nearly killed my knees / legs, since then I have readjusted the saddle and everything is good. Just make sure to not do too much to soon. Enjoy the ride and keep it up.

That's an impressive first ride. My first was only 2.5 miles and I seriously thought I was going to cry. My second, third, fourth, and fifth rides were also only 2.5 miles. The only difference between the first and fifth was that I no longer cried after the fifth. I just cussed a lot.

Great start! I used to road race competitively 25 years ago and 7 weeks ago I took my first ride since 1989. The ride was 5.7 miles, I was slow, in pain, and felt exhausted when I was done. Since then I have kept it up and can ride 40-50 miles now and average a decent pace. I am 12 pound lighter then when I started and much, much, much more healthier! Keep it up, you will be glad you did!
