Thoughts on this bike for a beginner?

Hi everyone, I've been lurking around the forums for a while but I finally made an account and I need some of your advice. I wasn't sure where to post this so sorry if this isn't the right spot.

Quick info:
I'm a college-aged male, 6'3" and 190 lbs. I'm not a huge biker but I want a nice bike I can ride on the sidewalk, bike trails, and some less-busy roads. I won't be riding more than 45 minutes at a time (mostly) with most trips less than 20 or 30.

So here's the ad for the bike: Trek 7.0 FX - Crossover Bike - Taller for 6 feet plus

It's just a basic Trek 7.0 fx 22.5". He said he thought it was a 2014. $220 seems too expensive for a used 7.0 fx but what if I could get it $150? Worth it, or should I keep looking?

Thanks guys.

EDIT: and if you're curious I currently ride an old Diamondback Cross Campus that I found for $35 on Craigslist. I just want to get more into biking and upgrade to something a bit nicer.

Seems like it's a very similar bike, just newer. What's up with the old one?

My current bike has some issues shifting. If I go into 2nd gear I have to hold it there or else it goes back to 1. And I can't get into 3rd gear at all. It's a 21 speed. I just want something nicer but don't want to spend over $200-300 for a used bike.

The bike should work.

You can do a half an hour ride on just about anything. Once you start getting up to an hour or so rides, then you might start looking at a road bike or drop bar cyclocross bike.

I assume you're having troubles with the front derailleur on your existing bike. Grip shifters? New (or used) shifters are cheap. Try to find a bike co-op that will give you some instruction on bike maintenance, or perhaps take a class on bike maintenance. It will be well worth it in the long run.

Even a new bike will need some maintenance, and derailleur adjustments.

IF it has trigger shifters, pry them open slightly enough to flush with WD-40.
It's a common "fix".
Flush, manipulate, flush, manipulate and you're usually good to go.

Thanks guys, I appreciate it. It has grip shifters, and I'm going to check out how to fix it. I might as well save the money until I'm sure I want something more expensive and I know exactly what I want.

Thanks again!

OEM picked for Cheap grip shifters it is hard to even replace the cable, then its easier to bin the whole shifter and put something else on.
