Most of my commute is really flat, but to get to my house at the end of the day I have a choice between...
150 feet of elevation gain in a quarter miler, peaking at 20% grade and mostly over 12%
or
170 feet of elevation gain in half a mile, peaking at 15% grade after being around 6-8% most of the way
You might think the extra quarter mile is a no-brainer to get a gentler average slope, but sometimes I feel like it's better to just go the steep way and get it over with.

It's hard for me to take pictures of hills in a way that gives an accurate impression of how steep they are. I was trying to a few weeks ago on a ride up to the crest of the coast range from my house, and the pictures just look like pictures of a gravel road.

There must be a photographer trick to it. After all, from the bike seat it looks like a mountain looming over you. But take a picture it looks flat.

Hmmmmmm.....I'd like to....but the only hills are the incline in my drive way. I like in coastal northern Florida....no hills on my commute. I think my next altitude gain is 2 ft, not including my driveway.

You're correct on Florida. In Boca for training this week and rented a bike. Did 10 miles like nothing on a city bike.

I frequently take a longer route home, but those routes are usually flatter too. But that's always my morning ride.

A nice gentle hill.
