I am very thankful that you drive. There's been talk here about cops starting to focus on left lane hogs. It'd be very welcome.

Last time someone tried to play the street taxes card on me I responded with, "I have two cars and they are both better than that piece of ****!"

All true, BTW...

My purely anecdotal observations... the Prius owners in my locale tend to be:

1. Little old ladies

2. Musicians, who have to drive a lot of miles for their work

3. Cyclists, who would rather be riding.

Question: Is a serious cyclist defined by having a disdainful attitude, or has that just been your experience?

I ask because I've considered myself a "serious" cyclist for the better part of 10 years, in that I ride to work out and to compete. I also consider myself to be a pretty friendly person who gets along with cyclists of all walks.

I guess I'm fortunate where I live and ride; I hardly see any Priuses.

LOL. Yeah well don't forget that some of the people (idiots?) compose your genetic make-up.

One day last summer.... I was cycling along part of a regular route... a well trafficked street adjacent to a residential neighborhood. As I approached a side street a car accelerated around me.... and then instead of abruptly turning directly in front of me... continued along on it way. I was a bit surprised.

I gave up the car for good in 1989. Have commuted to work ever since and racked up over 30,000 miles of bicycle touring around N. America as well. I don't really consider myself a "cyclist" any more than my wife considers herself a "motorist" because she drives everywhere.

That being said, with very few exceptions, i pretty much hate everybody - cyclist or not. I impersonate a nice guy most of the time.

Since the speed limit is the same in every lane, maybe the police should focus on those who insist on exceeding the legal limit instead. That would be very welcome.

Amen to both, but to that I would add, let the legal limit be what is "reasonable and prudent" under ideal conditions, with a competent vehicle; and enforcement of reckless/dangerous driving infractions, regardless of speed, when conditions are less than ideal, or vehicle is less than competent (to say nothing of the driver).

I commute to work sometimes, but it's not much of a commute, because I've lived three miles from work for 4 years.

If you feel like you hate everybody, then in my opinion your expectations for humanity were a little too high to begin with .

Hey that sounds like me.

On this topic of a vehicle "not seeing you" I had that happen Wednesday also. Except it was a guy going cat 6 up the bike lane and I was walking. We live just down from an intersection that has concrete barriers to keep cars from going through, it narrows down to two lanes for bikes. Any who at this intersection my wife with the stroller, me with my cane, and my son were crossing on one side of the barrier and five guys were crossing the other direction on the other side of the barrier. So nine people people crossing at one narrow intersection all well into it when captain cat six blows past all of us within less room to spare than appropriate.

I made eye contact with him, the guy just behind him stopped. The adults in the groups were shaking their heads and I thought how I was close enough to put my cane in his spokes.

Unfortunately this door swings both ways.

My wife often drives below the speed limit, AND in the left lane. So then people who wish to pass legally, while still not exceeding the speed limit, must do so in the right lane.

Seldom (actually never until your post) have I read anyone use the term "serious cyclist" to describe themselves while praising or complimenting "cyclists of all walks" i.e. cyclists not as serious as themselves.

My experience is that it is usually self described "serious" cyclists who post disparaging comments about other cyclists who don't fit their preferred profile for correct cycling, to include technique, bicycling "etiquette", equipment, need for speed, clothing, etc.

I used the term "serious" just to see how you defined it in a cycling context, and what your perspective was. FWIW, I do agree that what you're saying is true to a large extent; there are tons of roadie jerks out there. Ironically enough, those people tend to be newbie/lower cat racers or non-competitive roadies. A cat 1/2 knows that he (or she) is good and doesn't need to put other people down to feel good about themselves.
