Rubbed Out...

On this afternoon's ride home I noticed all the bike lane icons on Las Animas Street had been ground out sometime over the last two days. A dozen or so including my favorite with the taco'd wheel by Institute Street. I don't know if this is a precursor to repainting or resurfacing, or if it was vandalism on a large scale. The lanes are less than two years old. So long "taco" man...you will be missed.

That's a bizarre way to prep pavement. They could have pressure washed or blasted it off instead of destroying the surface. This will just lead to severe cracking and potholes over the next couple of years. Meanwhile it's a hazard to cyclists if the sloppy grinding created new ledges where riders aren't expecting them. This should be reported to the city, county or authority in charge of road maintenance.

Out of curiousity, is/was that supposed to represent a helmet or a 竹笠 on the cyclist

There were several in Portland that apparently had a non-standard diamond and the text "BIKES ONLY" which were ground off. Leaving a bumpy patch where they used to be.

I'd rather they naturally wear off over time without creating the rough spots on the road.

Could be some paving work coming soon. If Taco Bike Man was made of thermoplastic marking material some places would grind him off before placing a new asphalt overlay on the street. If not removed, new asphalt laid over top won't bond well. That's my semi-educated guess.

Never noticed the "helmet" until you mentioned it. Our bike lane icons look like that too. Must be a US-wide thing.

My gut feeling is road work is coming, or possibly green paint, as has been popping up in other bike lanes around town. Anyways I have a call in to the city's signs and markings division. BTW, according to the late, great Sheldon Brown a "tacoed" wheel is also known as a "potato chip."

I think a potato chip is less severe (a mild to serious wobble), taco is bent severely.

Hopefully like 1242Vintage suggested, it's just preparation for resurfacing, and soon you'll have fresh, new butter-smooth roads to ride on!

I like that you have a favorite... One area around here I like, because somebody came along with a sharpie or something, and drew eyes and a smile on all the biker heads

You are correct, sir! I just got a call from the city and they said resurfacing is coming (in a month or two) and the thermoplastic marking material would pose a problem. As to my concern that it may have been anti-bike vandalism, the guy with the city said that would not be out of the realm of possibilities, given what he's seen in the past.
