I recently bought this "Salsa Rain Jacket" from my LBS, and I really like it! It keeps my top very dry even in heavy rain, but also breathes, by having vents all down the arms. And being clear plastic, it allows my reflective jacket to shine through. Now I'd be all set if I could find any rain paints like it. Salsa doesn't indicate any such thing, and I didn't find anything obvious with a quick Google search, although I didn't keep looking very long.

Can anyone recommend anything, not including the standard yellow rubber fisherman's bib pants which I currently use? (They are bulky, and the elastic straps are kind of flimsy where they connect to the rubber.) Large garbage bag with leg holes?

I have a pair of the gore-tex pants that nashbar sells. They worked well for me....nothing special....just work well and seem to last.

There's a post by Koffee Brown in this section, where someone suggested some pants, maybe used for skiing, that are not as big as "normal", but a bit looser than tights.

I have a pair of Helly Hanson "packable" rain pants. They might be 8 years old. They stuff into the back pocket and snap closed as a pretty small package. They have a snap closed cuff but you really need to use a pants clip or strap to keep them away from the chain rings. I saw them recently in a store somewhere, possibly Eastern Mountain Sports? If you have an E.M.S. store nearby I would take a look.

Thanks, 2manybikes! A quick Google of Helly Hansen found a number of places I could probably mail-order them. I'll do some more research.

Beware- much of the affordable HH gear is NOT breathable at all.

Red Ledge Thunderlights. They are available with full zips or without. They are about Fifty bucks with full zips. Campmor carries them. Marmot makes the Precip line of affordable breathables, and TNF has something too. It should be noted that both of these companies offerings are more $. Red Ledge led the way towards cheaper waterproof/breathables with the Thunderlight line. It's a good product.

Old Dirt Hill

I recently bought a Stearns rainsuit. It's marketed towards hunters and outdoorsmen, but it works great for the bike. It was cheap ($25) and I think I'll get several years use out of it. It's not the most ventilated item out there, but it does the job and I'm pleased.

I'll probably buy something nicer down the road, but it works great for now.
