Best place to buy New York Fahgettaboudit locks??

Hello! My first post here and new to the forums.

I just got a bike a couple of days ago (sick of the gas prices!) that I'll be using to commute to work (Only a mile each way) and for around town, etc.. I'm looking to get a lock and have my sights set on the New York Fahgettaboudit locks. I've checked with not only with a couple of bike shops here in town, but I've even gone out of town to bike shops looking for them and NOBODY sells them in store (they seem to sell only the cheap deterant cables ). So I've resorted to buying online and am wondering where everyone purchased theirs from, best prices, best dealers, etc...?? Any and all suggestions appreciated!

Mark

Preformance Bike and Nashbar have been names I've been hearing about for a year now and many poeple buy from them and are repeat buyers so they must be doing something right with thier service.

Also check out the coupon thread here for discounts.

Where the heck do you reside that htey don't have the NYC locks around? The low deep valleys of the remote Montana terrain?

If you live in an area where bike shops only stock cable locks, I doubt you need a NY lock. A Kyrptonite or On-Guard mini U lock to secure frame to stanchion coupled with a cable lock through the wheels should be sufficient. Less expensive and less weight to lug around. I use an On-Guard Bulldog in DC. Like this one.

In my area, I've not yet seen a New York lock in stock. In fact, I've only seen two u-locks in any of the LBSs. One was the Evo 2000 that I got for half price, and the other was an On-Guard that same with a supplemental cable. WallyWorld has a Bell branded u-lock, but it seems kind of cheap and shoddy.

The NY lock is available on Amazon.com, but there's one place out there that sells it cheaper than they do.

I live in NYC and regularly chain my bike. You might look at previous posts on the subject. I use a Kryptonite combination lock and a cable lock. I usually take my seatpost with me. You might try eBay.

Transportation Alternatives, the NYC-based pedestrian/cyclist oriented pressure group, sells them by mail order, iirc. Maybe no cheaper than anyone else, but the money goes to a good cause.

Thanks!! (and thanks to everyone else as well!)

I reside in central California (of all places)....almost like the remote Montana terrain...except about 30x more expensive.

I shouldn't have said just the deterrant cables (although it's about 90-95% that). U-Locks are sold here but the only ones I've seen are $14 Master U-Locks, $14 Bell U-Locks and a low-mid grade OnGuard lock.

The area I live in is pretty much right on the border of "the good side of town and the bad side of town". Fortunately I'm on the good side, but don't want to take a chance. I would rather pay a little more for the lock than to pay to replace the Diamondback bike later.

I used bicyclebuys.com

I bought two New York locks from bicyclebuys.com last week (one Fahgettaboudit U-lock and one longer New York 3000 u-lock).

Kryptonite's own corporate website links directly to them, so I figured they must be alright. In fact, their service was great and super-fast. Now I just need to figure out how to carry the heavy buggers.

The NY Fahgettaboudit lock won't stop determined thieves. jonnyboy77's bike was stolen. The thieves cut through the Fahgettaboudit lock.

+1 for performance bike, their customer service is incredible. I've had no problems returning items that didn't fit, were flimsy, etc.

I bought a NY Fuggetaboudit Mini through BicycleBuys.com - it can be a hard lock to find. It arrived quickly, and for a decent price. As Uberoo comments, the lock is daggone heavy. I commute to work, and leave the lock on the rack - no stops between work and home is the downside.

Not that it would've made a difference, but technically that appears to be a 16mm-thick New York U-Lock, not one of the 18mm-thick New York Fahgettaboudit U-Locks (the latest versions of which are too thick to come with that bright-silver mounting attachment).

I bought two of the 18-mm thick U-Locks, and thought maybe that was overkill, until reading that horror story.
