I swear by the Sport Hill tights I've been wearing. I've worn them from 70 above F to below zero. I'm like you, don't want or need the tight stuff. These are a great compromise. They certainly aren't baggy. This isn't a cycling specific pant though.

I also recommend the PI Tokyo Tights or the Munich. They fit like baseball pants.

Who gives a f*ck if most women you know are turned on by a cyclist's attire or not? Is your commute a popularity contest or a beauty contest? It's their hang up...don't make it yours. Wear the best clothing for the job I say.

Loose fitting tights??? Isn't that an oxymoron?

How about sweats?

Loose tights go with your tall shorts.
The problem is that they get caught in the clips of your clipless pedals.

I use 3/4 shorts (my wife calls them capris) over running tights and it works great. They provide added wind protection as well as making you look 'normal'.

I wear bib shorts with tights over them during the winter. Coldest it gets here is the mid 30s to low 40s on most days. I also wear wool cycling socks and toe covers over my road shoes along with full finger gloves and a head band that covers my ears along with a couple layers up top consisting of a long sleeve base layer, a short sleeve jogging t-shirt (or a jersey) and some sort of wind-proof, lightweight, outer layer.

You are a cyclist. Looking normal is pointless.

I was not aware that SD has a winter. LOL

Sounds like exactly the setup I use at around 10-20 degrees in a snow storm. *points and laughs*

40's? I'd be wearing my cammo pants.

I second the REI loose tights. I've used them daily in the winter for 3 years and they look like I just bought them off the rack. Hands down the best bike clothing purchase I've ever made. Perfection.

Can somebody be more specific on the REI loose tights? They carry a lot of tights.

The model is the Novara Headwind. Windblocking front, poly back side, zip up cuffs. Most Excellent.

I never said I cared. I was just quoting what someone else said and I thought it was a relevant comment given the original question regarding appearance in an office. I wasn't making a statement about what it looks like, I don't care. I agree, wear the right gear for the task. I like loose-fitting tights like the running tights mentioned because of comfort not appearance but it is nice that they don't make you feel 'exposed' when you are off the bike.

The solution is to never get off your bike.

Somehow I doubt our property management would care for me rolling around our suite on a bike.

Laugh all you want but when it was in the low 30s last January for a week straight I was nice and comfy instead of freezing my arse off.

Fine. Be celibate if you want. Anyway, being from San Diego, what would you know about long pants?

I just picked up a pair of rain pants from foxwear.net. Lou even made 'em a bit longer than normal in case I needed the extra length (you just can't find customer service like that anymore, usually it's more like servicing the customer). I haven't had a chance to try them out yet, but the materials and stitching are first rate. The reviews on icebike.com also give them high marks.

I went for the lighter weight powershield fabric so I could wear them in slightly warmer temps and layer some polartec tights underneath for colder temps.

I've found that real cycling tights work great over a wide range of conditions, but after several thousand good natured jokes about men in tights, and realizing that my 4 mile commmute doesn't necessitate perfect biking clothing, I bought the Nashbar Crossroads pants. The things fit like MC Hammer pants. My wife sewed a new seam up the inside that took literally three inches off the circumference of the lower legs. They are still quite loose, but work ok now.

Now I'm looking for backups to the most quickly soiled of my commuting gear so I can cut down on the frequency of laundry loads. I'll probably just got to Dick's and buy the most appropriate pair of pants I can find.

buy a couple pairs of really nice tight asshugging, junk showing, spandex... it really does work the best and is the most comfortable.

then put some hiking shorts on over the top for modesty. in the winter, same shorts over the tights.

this winter i am thinking of making some shants (manly fixedgear name for capri's) for the colder days this winter to go over my tights.

i only ever wear spandex alone when i am racing....

Mocean makes nice ventilated wind pants made to wear over bike shorts and/or tights. Galls.com sells them on-line, and while they market toward public safety employees, I think will sell to the general public.

I'm married with a child actually. In fact, I had sex just last night.

During the winter I wear tights over my bib shorts or leg warmers. Temps actually get down in the 30s here in the winter overnight and into the early morning hours when I'm commuting to work. Shorts in 30 degree weather doesn't cut it for me. YMMV
