Interesting new line of bikes from Topeak

Today at the Seattle bike expo was (I was told) the U.S. introduction of a new line of bikes from Topeak, called Jango.

Interesting concept - aluminum frame, compact design, disc brakes, with lots of accessories that are made to clip into or onto the bike.

The one I saw on the floor was $1,100, they said.

There are *lots* of accessories for this bike -- back racks, front racks, a trailer for touring, bags, packs, lights, pumps, tool kits, front panniers --- even a Bob-like trailer for touring.

Personally, I didn't love it. I thought it was over-priced, and since the bikes had a front suspension I thought it was less useful as a road bike than so many other bikes. They had one all decked out for commuting with some super-slick, very clean lighting -- but I thought it would make more sense to have an internal front hub if they wanted a really slick set-up. Also, they had one set up on the floor as a touring bike, and it had very low spoke-count wheels. The PR guy said it was the designer's idea (?), but I don't understand why they would go away from a standard laced wheel for tough applications like commuting and touring.

Anyway, website is at:

It seems odd that a do-it-all bike would be manufactured in a male and female version.

They should make the bike gender nuetral. The "womens" design looks like it would work just fine for men. It looks like a modern MTB frame.

Am I missing something here?

Sorry I hadn't seen a Jango thread before (I just did a search, now I see what you are talking about)...

According to the guys at the booth, they have their first dealer in Seattle with bikes ready to sell...personally I don't know how a dealer could afford to stock all of the accessories that come with the bikes, maybe they will be order-on-demand.

In terms of an "integrated" bike concept, I like the Koga-Miyata line much better, myself. I told the guy at the booth that the bike might make sense at $500 for for $1100 I didn't really see it as a winner...
