I only wear one when its pitch black outside or when it’s raining really bad since most motorist don't assume people are out biking in crappy weather.
This is the one I wear;

I was looking through the AlertShirt site (www.alertshirt.com), and noticed that interesting logos can be added to their reflective gear..

I wear a hi viz neon lime reflective vest while cycling most of the year. I don't wear bright cycling specific shirts, just plain button down shirts most of the time. So the high viz vest lets cars see me better year round. People I know at work that pass me in their cars on the way to work have told me that I can easily be seen from a long distance.

My latest hiz viz vest was purchased at a Super Walmart in AZ while on a visit a few weeks ago, for $9. The label says Wall Wear. It is very similar to the Alertshirt vented vest, and is an ANSI II vest with a single horizontal stripe and two vertical stripes. The reflective stripes are not that heavy shiny plastic looking stuff, they are sort of grey looking tape that really lights up bright in the dark. I'll buy a couple more next time I go to super wallymart, they should last for many years.

I think it is more important when it's dark once summer solstice vanes. However is it fashion faux pax in to you? especially those in them lycra suits? I think the vest may be bad for aero though.

Geez, so hilarious the first time it was worth repeating five minutes later? You're like the guy who laughs at his own funnies all day!

I wear a bright orange one in cloudy/dusk conditions. I have noticed the yellow ones don't seem to work too well in foggy conditions (seemed to blend right in with the gray). Of course, it could be because it was foggy out, and hard to see anyway.

Yep.
I should point out that the problem I'm talking about was in heavy fog, at around 8 a.m. right after the sun came up.

I wear a mesh construction vest when commuting pretty much any time of year, bright sun to total darkness. I weights nothing, lets air through pretty well and I figure it makes it a little less likely that someone will right turn into me or right on red in front of me.

If I had a 1/5 oz of fashion sense I would leave it at home -- when I have shorts that have hi-vis yellow, the vest makes for an almost painful color combo.

I agree - at dawn/dusk, the orange is better. I believe Altura in the UK (and railway workers there!) actually has a two-tone vest.

I wear one when I know I will be out after dark. I am hoping that if I get hit, even with all of the lights that I have on the bike, they will be able to find my torso in the ditch on the country roads I ride.

In low light I wear my Air National Guard issue lime green reflective belt. I usually wear a hi-viz jersey or jacket when commuting so a reflective vest is overkill.

My commuter bike has a bright headlight, 2 PB Superflash blinkies in back (one on steady the other in blink mode), and tires with reflective sidewalls. If I'm going to be riding after dark I also wear reflective ankle bands.

I'm always commuting with a backpack, so the vest from the rear wouldn't do a darn thing. I wear the Illuminite stuff when it's dark - also have reflective ankle straps and lots of lighting.

My short-daylight coat is reflective. I've been meaning to get one of those big reflective triangles for year-round use (actually a couple of them).

I have one that I wear in the winter. it is neon yellow by light but the entire thing is covered with illuminite so in dark I almost glow.

As a car commuter this time of year I strongly recommend you year-rounders use reflective material somewhere. There are plenty of occasions when that's all I see, meaning if the biker didn't have that - I wouldn't see them at all!

Vest!

Hi, i was nicely told by a large black motorist that i needed some kind of reflective stripe on my person.
The 2 SuperFlashes did not let him know that it was accually a person riding a bicycle on the highway break down lane.
I gave him the thumbs up and thanked him for his concern for my safety.
At lunch break that very day, i went to Harbor Freight store and bought a cheap lime green construction type reflective striped vest. They only stocked large and extra large. I am a small dude and wear it all the time without a shirt and it looks like i am wearing a cape on my darth looking fixie!
A new Fixie fad! LOL!
Also bought ankle reflective straps and a bell plus 2 spoke reflectors on the back wheel.

Wearing a neon reflective vest is a very good advice. Be seen for your safety. Alot of drivers out there that should not be behind the wheel due to i own the road syndrum etc...

A reflective vest isn't overkill if you're out in the dark. Have a look at my ANSI neon-lime vest below, and then how it looks in dim light. At anything beyond point-blank range, the reflective tape on the vest is the only part of it that'll stand out in darkness.

Glad to hear you have reflective ankle bands, they're a valuable item since they have motion.

^ Reflective vest, reflective legbands, reflective tires and some high-end reflective tape

It's worth noting that matte-finish reflective tape can lose a lot of its effectiveness when wet. Try it out... soak part of your vest and see what the effect is. The vest in my picture uses glossy reflective tape that doesn't have that problem (plus a stripe of 3M Scotchlite ironed on around the bottom, since I had some left over from the Tron Jacket project).
