Thrift Store buy on sale.
$1.75 Rain jacket XL.
Cut off the sleeves and use electrical tape to secure them around your ankles.
Worked today for 60 miles in the rain.

Hey Fred, did you buy that before the ride or during the ride? Doncha know that duct tape is cheaper than electrical tape? :-)

Sucks, maybe try REI?

Electrical tape holds in the rain.

Bought last year.

Another vote for #2. I've had the same pair of MEC booties for about 10 years. They're so old the reflective stripe has mostly peeled off... They still keep my feet dry in almost anything. (I've had wet feet when riding all day in torrential downpours, but I think that's more from riding or walking through puddles and having water soak in through the bottom of my shoes where the cleat mounts.) For a commute of anything under an hour or two, they're great.

If I had to buy booties again (I've already worn out 2 sets), I would go with the MECs.

You can tell it's the commuting forum because he'll get more answers to his questions than comments with innuendos!

+1 on the gore over shoes , by far the most expensive part of my wet weather ensemble but the only one that really works

Also there are different functions for booties. All of these seem to be for rain protection. For those of us in colder climes, warmth is of more paramount interest. For that, it's hard to beat the Performance brand neoprene shoe covers...warm, cheap, tough (over 10 years on current pair).

The J&G and the MEC look interesting for the Southern US tour my wife and I are going on next spring.
I have the performance ones and they are a pain with mountain shoes I prefer and doubly so with campus peddles. Work good with road shoes and double sided SPD peddles. Nice and warm though.

Of the choices above I like the MEC. Look like they would work good with mountain shoes. Concerned about the wear on them if you tried to walk much in them.

The MEC ones stop rain great, but they are bulky. If its not raining on the way home, they dont pack up and store well.

The only bootie I've found that fits is the Gator XL. Not my favorite in the wet, since it's neoprene and absorbs water. And they aren't that warm. But they fit

I thought it only rained in Texas when I am there...

You just need a Canadian with a MEC membership who will pick up a pair and send them to you... shipping won't be much on an item like this as they would fit in a shipping envelope.
